Captains awards and badges

that's all good, but i never EVER get my u-boat war badge or my u-boat front clasp, how strange eh, and its been three careers.

oh i think i got it once, but it was after i cam in empty handed like twice in a row. Perhaps thats the ticket?

Sounds silly, but in five years of playing, i have only gotten my front clasp ONCE!!!! and that was after starting a mission, then accidently ramming a destroyer in port. Damage was bad enough I just ended the patrol in harbor, about 300 Yrds from where it began. Once the awards screen came up, it said I got it. So, i have no idea how you realy go about getting one. Oh, and wound badges are impossible.

Well I just got the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Crossed Swords....for sinking the Admiral Hipper in the harbor. I'm beginning to think that at least some, if not ALL, awards aren't based on tonnage but on TYPE OF SHIP sunk.

I've just completed my fourth patrol. For doing so I was promoted to Oberleutnant zur see, got the Iron cross first class and the u-boat clasp after sinking nearly 85k tons of warship (Hood and a very lucky shot on Nelson that missed my intended target), with sufficient merchants to take my tonnage to about 115k.

However:

At the very start of the patrol I saved my game after transiting the Kiel canal, then exited the game with return to base instead of using save and exit. Obviously I reloaded the save to continue the patrol another time, but for my heroic navigation of an inland waterway I was awarded with the promotion and the Iron Cross, first class.

I think this proves that the game just makes it up as it goes along!

Panser: I think you are exactly right. The awards for the boat Captain seem to be strictly random. Last night I went on a pretty unsuccessful patrol. I was down around Gibralter looking for targets of opportunity. I got too close to the harbor and had to sneak away from some anti-sub patrol boats. The weather was horrible and on my way out of the straights of Gibralter I picked up a lone ore ship. It was a big one and I fired all 6 torpedoes at it since I hadn't fired anything anyway and it was close to the end of my patrol. Only one torpedo hit and I lost the ore ship in the bad weather. I increased the time to 32X and headed home and suddenly saw a message that the ore ship sank! When I exited the patrol I saw I was awarded diamonds to the Knights Cross, the Submarine badge, and the Close Combat sub badge!

And I have the ultimate weirdness today....I sank a British sailing sloop and a passenger-cargo ship and went back to port and was awarded the German Cross.

I can't believe that nobody has hacked into whatever file is responsible for these awards, or hasn't made a program that awards them more logically. As it is it's so random and weird that you have no real way of knowing how any of the awards and decorations are earned.

i havent gotten any badge or the german cross, but i DO have the ultimate Knights Cross deluxe. i have sunk every type of ship there is, and is at about 1 600K tons...
