May 1944 off Palawan, Philippines....on third patrol, first out of Fremantle, pick up a 12 ship convoy with 4 escorts at noon, by 1400, ain position to attack submerged, fired 6 Mark 14's, three each at two Buzyun Maru medium tankers, two hit the first, one misses astern and continues on, hits a large Nippon Maru tanker, which goes up in a fireball and breaks in half from one hit, mustve had a load of fuel on board.All three hit next medium tanker fired at...three tankers down in one attack.
Suddenly sonar reports warship close, sweep to the bearing with scope, a Type C escort is just about 600 yards away.Drop the scope, go to flank speed and order 300 feet, on the way down fast as it roars overhead and hear many splashes.As I pass 130 feet...charges go off, loud and shakes the boat, take some damage to trim pump, compressor, sonar, TDC, fuel tank, but overall nothing major, as pass thermal layer, cut speed and go to silent running, level off at 300 and after several hours, slipped away. Now, seas were flat and calm, never had pinging, never had anymore close charges and the escorts never once used active sonar.Anyone else has this? In regular TMO they wouldve been on me like white on rice.Just wondering if something wrong with RSRD? Ideal sonar conditions for them, shouldve gave me more trouble than they did.Anyone? |

In stock, if you set up a mission so that a destroyer drives directly over you, without knowing you are there it will drop charges without pinging you. I don't know why for sure, but I assumed it was an AI hack, that if it detected you and drove straight at you it would auto drop without having to detect you directly below, which their sensors wouldn't allow. The side effect is if it didn't detect you, then it would still drop charges. They don't appear to notice they dropped charges either, so show no signs of having detected you.

Sounds strange. I've had them pop me as such without pinging being close, maybe seeing the scope, ect...but eventually the rest would join in and almost always one or more would go pinging. That's one thing I hate, no way to pick up which is the pinging ship.
Is this the first time? In flat calm water they usually stick with me until they're out of charges or I'm dead. Seems I read somewhere that the ships that are pinging, you don't actually hear it until you're in their sonor cone. Not sure if it's true. Seems I can get an idea of the pinging ship by the sharpness of the ping and my angle to the nearest one and the run it makes. I can't recall having what Nisgeis said happening to me either, but makes sense. Just getting into my 1.9 career, so I'll watch for it. I don't run into many Type a-d's until later war. |

Something weird....did a follow up night surface attack on same convoy....
full moon so had to fire from long distance, fired four Mark 14's at 4600 yards at another Nippon Maru tanker.During torpedo run, was spotted and forced to dive, reset speed to 5 knots instead of 6 during dive in case tanker made evasive movements and slowed, so atleast two hits would maybe do the job, fired the last two as boat was going down.Seas were absolutely calm still as I passed 250 feet, BOOM....all 6 torpedos hit the large tanker, huge explosions.Leveled off at 300, escorts ran right over my head, no pinging, went to my old position abou 700 yards behind me, dropped nearly 100 charges altogether, never heard pinging, they never found me, in ideal sonar conditions again.They did hang out long enough that the convoy was able to slip away, when I tried to come up at dawn and catch up, planes and a straggler escort kept me away, only four bow fish left and not enough fuel to pursue and out of my area, turned back. Found another convoy 4 days later near Balabac Strait, had an escort carrier on far side, once I saw this, set fish to run at 18 feet so could fire under some shallow draft freighters and try to take the CVE out.Seas were kind of rough so some high speed runs at 100 feet went undetected.Fired all four fish from 4,600 yards at the CVE....3 hit a large freighter that sped up for some reason, one made it through and was going to hit then passed right under the carrier.ID book said it had draft of 24 feet, figured set at 18 feet even in heavy seas would get it, I had external camera on so saw it run, it scraped bottom of hull, if had megnetic detonator, wouldve been nice. Anyway, again escorts were pushovers, no pinging, no attacks close to me.Somethings up, its May 1944 and im dealing with the D team here. |

I did notice it once myself tonight. Attacked a large convoy near Palau. Had 3 aux subchasers, but two dd's. Strange, they never pinged. The aux subchasers I assume have no sonar, but made the perfect runs. The dd's got close but never ran over me, nor pinged. I escaped easily. I did run into another lone dd after I escaped that came right to me. He was over 8000 yards away and thought he would pass, but at 3000 yards turned towards me and shortly started pinging. Normal workover, dived to 600ft and escaped in rough sea's with no problem. Course I'm in 43, but was strange two dd's didn't ping. Next patrol, formosa, type A's pinged me normally and almost sunk me in 300 ft of water. |

maybe just a fluke, but i was in flat calm seas, ideal sonar conditions during both attacks on the first convoy.Second convoy seas were rough.In TMO only they wouldve been all over me.
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with many of the escorts in convoys in RSRD having their skill level set to competent.In regular TMO almost all escorts are Vet and a few are set to elite.Maybe was just a fluke, perhaps will find out next patrol. Still had a good patrol though, ended with almost 40,000 tons down, mostly tankers. |

nope, opened up the files and many escorts, in fact it seems most are set to competent.I would do changes myself but you cant with RSRD, upsets everything else for some reason.

RSRDC is working as designed
The convoy in question is C 1944/05/13 11+4 from 44b_Jap_Convoys.mis. Within that convoy are 11 Merchants and 4 escorts. These escorts are 2 Type A/B Coastal Defense Ships and 2 Type C Coastal Defense Ships. The configuration date for this convoy is set to March 1 1944, which means that all weapons and sensors within the *.sns and .eqp files are set to that date. If you review the .sns file for the Type C CDs you will note that they do not receive a Type93-5A Active Sonar until 19440401. The Type A/B CDs receive a Type93-5A Active Sonar on 19430801, however due to a typo in the .sns file the active sonar does not become active until March 31 1944. There for none of the escorts have active sonar If you want to fix the problem for the Type A/B do the following Edit Data\Sea\NCD_TYPEB\NCD_TYPEB.sns Find: [Sensor 4] NodeName=N01 LinkName=NULL StartDate=1938010 EndDate=19440331 and change it to read [Sensor 4] NodeName=N01 LinkName=NULL StartDate=1938010 EndDate=19430731 Last edited by lurker_hlb3; 01-14-10 at 06:25 PM. |

Thanks. Anyway, I was Just asking, not pointing any fingers. I've made this mistake before, so it's entirely possible i fudged it up again. Admitidly my desire to open up ANY sh4 game file right now is virtually non existant, so i was being lazy by asking, rather then opening up the files and seeing for myself when i get home from work.
I really have to tip my hat Lurker, i don't know how you manage to keep up with the mods you have out. You must have the patience of a saint. If i managed the mods you do, i'd be letting loose with the F'ing fury on a regular basis. |
