with 1.5 you dont need the 1.4 patch just install the regular game then v1.5 and your done
steam has issues and many people feel you want to avoid dealing with them if you can. i dont know all the details but im pretty sure you have major problems if you ever try to reinstall the steam version activation. i dont know what you paid for it but you can buy the gold edition of sh4 for $10 now and that has sh4 plus the ubm v1.5 ad-on on disk so you avoid the download. im afraid you might not have made the best choice there but with luck someone who knows more about steam can advise you. |

Steam should be fine, other than the annoying tendency of automatically patching your games whether you want them patched or not (that's part of the reason your 1.4 patch didn't work, the other being that Steam keeps games in a different default location). With SH4 that shouldn't be as much of a problem since 1.5 will more than likely be the last patch released (with a game like Empire: Total War, though, it's hell, every new little hotfix patch screws over any mods you have). Your game files are kept in the directory "\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\"...just look for the SH4 folder there, and then follow the instructions for the mods you want. To be fair, I've never tried to heavily modify a Steam game, so all of that is theoretical.
On the plus side, Steam is great about reinstalling. Once you've bought anything through Steam, it's part of your account for good. I've never had any trouble redownloading/reinstalling a game I bought in the past. However, I have heard of people having reinstall issues if they're using the "other white meat," Direct2Drive. I haven't used D2D enough to know if those complaints are valid. |
