You're right of course, I admit taking a bit of time to read and understand these things wasn't my first port of call.

I've re-installed the lot correctly and now have the RFB loading screen which I didn't have before, thought something was amiss...

Installing the game to some other location than inside the Program Files folder solves this problem entirely. You need administrator rights because Vista and 7 treats stuff in Program Files with special precautions.
