i think this looks like an arcade game to me where is the engine telegraph all the features needed for a captain to have right in front of him during comabt operations all i see is little buttons i think sh3 looked better than this the interior might look good but the periscope is beyond terrible if this is not improved then its going to be a shame at the time of release

Remember that a real U-boat commander had no gui floating in his vision at all
![]() The gui is the necessary conduit that is needed for us to access the game and have some sort of situational awareness at a glance. |

I'm having funny roller-coaster feelings about SH5. After the initial video release (couple months back) I was on the fence. The video (besides the obvious factual mistakes) was too SH4-ish for my tastes so I waited. After Ubisoft's release of SH5 3D Engine demonstration my feelings skyrocketed towards DAMN-CAN'T-WAIT-FOR-THE-RELEASE mindset. This last video did a lot of damage, though and my expectations for the game plummeted again. This new video did more damage then good. I almost wish that I have never seen it. I understand that the game it is sill far from being finished so I'm not gonna bash it but I do not understand why would Ubisoft release it. In one sentence the game looks like crap: Hideous GUI, platform (1st person shooter) feel of it, RPG-ish crew management, etc.
I even disagree with the opinions of people about the 3D interior: considering nowadays capabilities of graphics cards the interior of the uboat could be modeled to the last rivet. What I saw in the video made me think: ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Tomi's engine room is how I expected the whole interior to look like. I was already dead set on running to the store the day of its release and buying it. What the last video achieved is to dissuade me from it. Unless Ubisoft releases playable demo and convices me to that this is an absolute "must-have-game" I am employing waiting tactics and sticking with SH3.

An interface is more than just buttons and dials. Your avatar and your crew should be the interface. I'm amazed they threw immersion out the window with this interface. I feel like they went a big step backwards and completely ignored many suggestions.
Hitman, you have my understanding, when I saw the marks I couldn't believe it either. When I started making KiUB in september, I took about a month to make a design for the perfect interface in a sub game. I still have it my mind. Hardcoding and the difficulty of the menu_1024.ini file prevented me from doing what I wanted. I'm not sure how many of you have seen the KiUB interface integrated in OM, so here's a pic (the aobf has been cut to show the marks and the contrast is wrong in the image): ![]() This might surprise some, but I HATE how my interface looks and I did so before I put in the first object. I hate clicking on dials to give orders! I've been an advocate of 3d only and orders only interface since SH3. What's worse is that you can not believe how close I was to do the interface I wanted, if it weren't for a few but major hardcoding ro*******s. Hopefully, I'll be able to build it in SH5. I won't hold my breath tho. ![]() EDIT: why is r.o.a.d.b.l.o.c.k considered a dirty word? ![]() |

Judging from the letters removed and the letters not removed, I'm guessing they have something against the word *******.
[edit] Yep. They don't want you blocking those ads. As for Tomi's work, the devs addressed that awhile back, saying something to the effect that it would be too heavy graphically to work even on SH5-ready cards and computers. We'll see if Tomi's current one works on SH4 without slowing it to a standstill.

You are also probably right about the amount of time Tomi spent on it BUT Tomi is only one man (albeit of incredible skills I might add) while Ubisoft should have a TEAM of 3D modelers to work with... Also as far as gameplay goes, we haven't seen anything yet. Quote:
I would be interested to know how many polygons are used in Tomi's work. As of now I am disappointed with the road the SH5 is taking: I would prefer if Ubisoft released two versions - one for 1st person shooter players with modern looking interface, "health bars" and similar crap which would be bought, played and (very likely) forgotten in short time and second one for hardcore(ish) subsim players with detailed interior models, targeting, historically looking map, instruments and atmosphere comparable to SH3 with GWX. For that version I would be willing to wait longer. As of now I am preparing myself for huge disappointment with SH5. But, sure as hell, I would love to be proven wrong.

How much time has Tomi spent on one compartment of the U-boat? Would you rather the dev team devoted all of their resources to eye candy and making sure every rivet was in the correct place in one compartment at the expense of gameplay? How often are you the commander of the U-boat going to head back to the engine room?

Especially the golden one!
![]() You make a good point though. Tomi's work is EXCELLENT, however he was not being held down by multiple developments and agendas. Eventually, SH5 will grow to look like that... time is all we need. that and Good modders like Tomi on the job ![]()
