Default HMT Aquitania

Something REALLY weird happened to me on this patrol. Never had this happen before so I will share my unbelievable luck with you guys.

It's September 14, 1943 and this is my first career playing GWX 3.0 Gold. I had just finished contact with an Allied convoy heading south at 5 knots in grid BE62 when I was forced to dive due to aircraft radar signals.

I traveled for about 2 hours underwater at 2 knots before my sonar-man heard a ship bearing about 10*. I only had 5 fish in the bow and 1 in the rear so I had set a course for home due to the damage I suffered in a surprise air rocket attack right before the convoy encounter.

My sonar-man actually loses contact with the ship for a while and I go to periscope depth, scanning the horizon reveals a Christmas present the likes of which I don't think I've ever encountered in all my years at sea.

So barely 50nm from the convoy I had attacked, I had charted a course that brought me into perfect firing distance from the biggest liner in the Atlantic. And it was at a dead stop.

I play at 90% with map contacts on and free look so I can check out all the eye candy in GWX so I quickly zoomed over to the hulking ship to hear the familiar broadcast sounds of a sinking ship in GWX. The wind was blowing at about 10m per second and I assumed it could have been succumbing to the bad weather like I've seen other ships have in the past. But smaller ships, not 44,000 ton ships like the Aquitania.

My worst fear was that it would turn into a red mark on the map before my eyes, stealing the credit away from me.

She was about 2-2500m from me and at a dead stop, the water line was actually quite higher than normal and I feared she would sink at any moment. However the angle of attack was terrible, but I was in a rush.

I went flank speed towards her and set my TI to fast and 5m depth, impact detonator. I watched the first torpedo bounce off the hull with a thud, it could have been the 30* angle of bow that I had to work with.

I set flank on a parallel course, trying to get a better angle as quickly as I could, during this time I set the depth of my next fish to 1m hoping I would strike the ship before the hull started to bend, increasing the chance of a detonation. I waited a long four minutes and then turned my boat until I was at 0 gyro angle, aiming for her bow.

I fired and struck, instantly giving me a 'she's going down' message that confirmed my suspicion she was minutes away from going under without my help.

So I finished the patrol with over 72,000 tons under my belt and had a strange feeling this was one of those things that I would never see again for as long as I play this game

BE62 might just replace BF17 as my favorite hunting ground...

Outstanding work, Tonnage Ace...

One time i intercept a invasion force witch i belive they sail to the Italian island of Sicilia, in the Mediterranean Sea, and in the middle of the force, as a troop transport there as the famous HMT Aquitania...witch i sunk, after i was able sunk all the escorts, and suport ships!
It was the first, the unique, and the last time i find and sunk this great ship!

Well done, keep the good work, mate...

AFAIK she was HMT during WWI period. In WW2 she was a RMS I think.

During WWII it was RMS (Royal Mail Ship or Steamer, a ship prefix for vessels that carry mail under contract to the British Royal Mail).

Someone's gotta inform the Kriegsmarine commanders that the HMT prefix has expired about 20years ago

HMT appears in some mods, RMS in others.

I guess it's the modders personal choice...

Anyone encounter a ship this size or any ship floating in the water in open sea?

IIRC there was a minor bug in VonDos' old models that led to his ships either riding very low in the water or sometimes sinking slowly on their own as well as problems with the propulsion.

From VonDos' shipyard, post #17 (13 May 2008):
Quote:
ATTENTION!! A bug has been found in RMS Queen Mary, SS Empress of Britain and SS Rex; sometime they can be seen stopped and half sunk on them route. I'm working on this problem, please be patient. Others units aren't affected by this.
Although the Aquitania isn't mentioned it's possible that it's the same problem. The solution would be to download the latest version of RMS Aquitania from VonDos' shipyard: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=136508

Aquitania can also be found in Portsmouth docks in the early days of the war.

If you're mad enough to go in there, of course

I used to always raid Portsmouth on the first severals days of the war - Sneak in September 2nd, sit and wait for the message to go, then Los!, and a quick escape...
