Default Mission help Episode 4

In Episode 4, where you are in the Bering sea, mission 2 as the Soviets is about taking four pt boats, 2 Elco (I think) and 2 of the Soviet rocket boats to bombard an airbase. Only problem- a big supply of patrol trawlers to dispatch and a time limit before bombers get airborne. The intel guy says 2 but there is 5 at least including some big thing that doesn't seem to take hits. The Elcos can deal pretty well with the trawlers and I suppose (though I haven't tried) I could torpedo the other big slow thing. Problem is by the time thats done- even at full speed, the JU-87's are up and they make straight for the rocket boats and it's all over. And this on easy.

Any help here? Funny, the missions are all fairly easy (again, on easy!) but this one is giving me gastric problems.

Cheers,

Skipper

I'm having the same trouble with that mission. I've tried sending the elcos ahead to take out the germans, but if lose the boats with rockets, the mission fails. on fifth try.

Default bigger is better...

Here's how I solved it: I changed the two Elco's to a Fletcher class destroyer and the Maxim Gorky cruiser. No challenge, but lots of fun. I would like to be able to move the camera freely around the map- especially to watch the mayhem I'm dealing out. Any suggestions?

BTW it wasn't hard to change the boat types. It was a BIT more complex to actually add boats (which I did at first to no success). First time "modding"

cheers

Hi,

the mission is not that difficult than it seems. It could be solved without cheating.

Here how it worked for me on normal difficulty:
At first make two groups. The Elcos as one and the G5 rockets as the other.
Let the Elcos go straight to the isle, moving in from the south not too fast. The G5s make a wide circle to the west around the isle and move in from the north west, let them stop about 2 miles (2 squares on map) away from the base.
When the Elcos spot the first enemy boat let them form in line and go wide circles as the fire (it's better to support the crews by manual firing) on the enemy. Don't let the enemy boats come too close, fire on distance. When too ore more enemy boats appear, lay some smoke to seperate them and take them down. They don't need much hits but are dangerous when they come close. So don't let them...
When the enemy boats are sunk, select the tactical map, select both G5 and switch to "attack with rockets". Go near to the isle for about 1,5 miles and select the base as target. The Rocket boats will attack now, they aim very good (i tried to fire the rockets for four or five times manually and did not get a direct hit). Maybe you will try to fire yourself, but when you want to solve this mission quickly, the crew does very well.
After destroying the base, get all boats together and move to the south just were you came from. That's it!

Hey midnight,

Thanks for the tips- and wow- looks like some real life tactics work. I've been trying to figure this one out (now on round two which involves no cheating + nomal mode) but have been trying high speed "slashing" attacks escaping under smoke to no success at all. Going to try the snipe now. How though do our guns effectively outrange theirs- or does it really depend on human gunnery.

Also, the base isn't always selectable. I think I have to risk an elco inside shore fire to "light it up" or is there some way to do this I'm not aware of?

Cheers

Hi skipper,

yes, our guns really outrange the enemy one's, but it's a good idea to support the crews by human gunnery. For myself, i tried this mission several times too and i think the tactical key is to keep the enemy boats on distance and to seperate them from each other. Take them down while BOTH Elcos only fire at ONE enemy ship. Then they will succeed very quickly.
The crews of the G5s really do a great job. After trying this mission once again i think they are not targeting the base, but even more the grounded enemy planes. So you have to be close enough, so that they are able to spot them. About 1,5 miles distance. After launching all 20 rockets the base is destroyed within seconds...
