Damn near pulled a Rockin Robbibins !

patrolling south of Truk I think just cruising around in the pouring rain at night with about 3 feet of visibility.

Got tired of the rain and seas and decided to take a dip below to get some rest, havent seen a contact in days.

Of course as soon as we reach about 40 feet 'sonar contact'. A little bit of planning and a course is plotted to intercept. Thank god we have radar should be able to get close still surfaced.

Well as we closed we picked up another contact and another and another... wholy... its a convoy, military and freakin huge, never seen anything like it.

We work our way in and get ready to set a shot on one that was going to come by close... real close.. like 600 yards.

Pop up the scope and start working the solution open the rec manual and go back to the scope.. hey wait a minute... the flag.... its white and thats a big ass ship for a japaneese... I wonder....

So I 'cheated' popped to exterior cam and 'flew' over to the contact... Fletcher Class DD boy that was close !

I tooled around for a while longer and it was an invasion fleet two groups counted 38 ships in the first group

We sailed right through the middle of them surfaced and exchanged waves. We dident mention that we had them lined up and were literally 10 seconds away from firing an electric eel at them.

Man were you lucky! In my attack I couldn't see squat. Couldn't even find the with the external camera, TBT or binoculars. Then I got excited about finding warships for only the third time since I've played SH4 and.....

You know the rest of the story.

Yea I was flipping through the rec. manual when It dawned on me.... "hey this is just like RR had descibed"

It was pretty cool though have never ever seen that many 'active' ships in one spot all told probably close to 50 or so.

I have the time and location noted at home but it was some invasion force. I had actually been sent out to 'scout' around before its arrival. That was another clue.. an invasion force was due. Just never had an assigned mission correspond with an actual event. Pretty cool.

Default I do not have that problem

I never can see anything at night. I think my attack periscope night vision is damaged.

Your story reminds me of a custom mission I tried. As soon as the mission commenced (within 10 seconds), my boat was shelled repeatedly and was destroyed before I could dive to safety. I replayed it ten times at least. Each time my boat was destroyed. When I finally was lucky enough to submerge, survive a barrage of depth charges, and repair the damage, the attackers had sailed far away. Turns out that Peabody advised me that I had selected a mission where I was required to activate a playable Fuso and join the very enemy task force that had been bombarding my boat. Because I failed to activate the Fuso, my submarine popped-up at the outset of the mission smack in the middle the Japanese task force and was the proverbial sitting duck. I would summarize the experience as one resulting from a failure to comphrehend the mission. A HUGE, very BASIC mistake.

That reminds me of the time I was stalking a convoy, the convoy moved a little faster than I had anticipated and needed to get to periscope depth quickly after bobbing around at 100 feet or so.

So the order to blow ballast were given... twice

We popped up like a cork right in the middle of the convoy.

Funny thing was the escorts immediatly started shelling us regardless of what was in the way. A couple of freighters caught a few rounds for us and saved our ass.
