Former Archbishop's treasure found in London river !

Wow... wonder how these guys found that in the first place. Not exactly a popular diving spot

LONDON — A fresh mystery is gripping Britain's religious community: Just how did a treasure trove of rare medallions and coins collected by a former archbishop of Canterbury end up at the bottom of the River Wear?
The coins, medals, goblets and other religious items were found over the last few years by two divers, Gary and Trevor Bankhead, in the frigid, murky river waters that loop around Durham Cathedral, a Norman-style classic.

It is a popular diving spot actually....and those two have found stuff in the exact same spot before.

What I'm wondering is why wasn't the kit reported stolen or missing prior?

Wierd story though, often treasure finds in rivers are examples of people finding stuff then later "discovering" it in the river to avoid trove law.

It is supposed that the Archbishop tossed the items into the river as some sort of token offering to the city, people or the river that served it.

A sort of giving up of material wealth as it were.

On the subject of religon and wealth I only have to mention the vatican and move on.

I admit I just read what you quoted, and the headline. Interest beyond that was too low.

Nevertheless my question is valid, in general. And yes, I agree on the problematic example given by the Catholic church (and last but not least the Orthodox church as well).

The last time I looked, the River Wear was in Durham

Mind you, it is south of the true Northern English

In this case they where all gifts.
It would not surprise me if the majority of C of E silverware was a gift
from a wealthy patron at somepoint.

Even if they where not, the treasures Churches have don't tend to be the
kind of things that give the vicars luxurious lifestyles.
