Some games run in different modes. Crysis can be started in DX9 or DX10 modes, for example. Others have DX10 exclusive options. For example, World in Conflict has an option to enable shadows from clouds and dual-monitor support, only if the system running it has DX10 support.

Technically a game should be faster in DX10, but in practice it varies. The extra eyecandy may well end up costing a little more performance. I think it comes down to optimization really. A game that's done purely in DX10 probably has better performance, because there are more efficient ways of getting the desired effect. But since not everyone can run games in DX10 yet, they wind up doing most in DX9, with some extra DX10 features tacked on. I think that if there are any performance gains to be had like that, they're probably minor at best, more likely negligible.

Crysis runs slower in DX10 mode than in "very high"-hack DX9 mode.
(you can't normally set "very high" in Crysis in DX9, but you can change the settings for "high" preset to match those of "very high", effectively enabling "very high" in DX9)

Multiple monitor support for Silent Hunter would SO rock!

DirectCompute in DirectX 11 for Windows 7 is going to be huge.

It's not only a matter of graphic beauty/performance. Dx11 will bring a new tecnology which will allow to use multiple threads more efficiently.. . and this is only one of the new features this library will offer. I don't know the details, but i really hope this game will be dx11, not only for the graphic, but for the engine mechanics. Of course it will be dx 10 compatible, it has to be, for obvious reasons..

The multithreading was possible in DX10. Not new, just improved.

There are several games that will have DX11 support known already, SH5 is not one of them. But who knows, maybe they can work in some support.

The gaming community would laugh if SH5 didn't have DX10 and... DX9. DX11 capable

It's 2010 people when it's released.

You can't hold off upgrading for ever.

I expect DX10.

I don't think it's unrealistic to expect SH5 to have DX11 compatibility at the top-end of the graphics slider. DX11 cards will be out for Xmas, way before the release of SH5.

It would make sense of the publishers also, after all graphical bling is a big selling point despite it not being as important as other aspects of the game. The PC gaming generation is getting older and plenty of people are able to get the new generation of hardware to make it worthwhile doing.

I guess it would be too late to add it if they hadn't started with it in mind though, its not a simple change over - or is it?

DX11 is too early (especially for a game this far in development), DX10 is too vista-only. Maybe a bit of optional DX10 additionnal eye-candies, though mainly Dx9. It shows off in the screenshots anyway, even if the game is not finished, it should be too late now for the 3d engine to be way more detailed than what we saw. Couldn't be that much different I guess. And everything we saw doesn't even reach the limits of Dx9, so it should be way enough.
Now "eye-candy" aside, To get the optimization for better FPS one could get with dx10 (or later on dx11) over Dx9, a game would probably best be developed primarily for dx10, and that's never gonna happen because of Vista failing to replace XP (and with win7 coming out and its dx11)

As repeated many times... SH5 should last for years and years...as all the serious sims.

If it is to be released 6 (or 8) months after Win7 it should be Dx11...

Othervise, it would be graphically obsolete game - at date of release

Stories about Vista and Dx10 will be very soon extinguished ( except some Amazonia and NewGuinea remote tribes... )
