I guess in that way I am still a noob... never had the pleasure of running into the beach... maybe it was the ex-captain in me... but I noticed early on if you didn't zoom in close to the chart it was inaccurate from a wide view.

I usually do long course tracks in open water and then zoom in close for nav in and amongst coastal areas.

I do the same and I haven't hit an island.

Theres a couple spits of sand out in the middle of nowhere that are easy to overlook when plotting the longer legs. If you play long enough odds are sooner or later you will find one.
