^^This - OH YES that would be awesome change for you usual escort/ merchent combo.
Sub encounters were not as rare as many people seem to think, 18 Uboats were torpeedoed by Allied submarines.

British Subs make sense in an expansion, as they are the underdog of WW2 Submarine history they will never justify having a 'stand alone' SH product built around them.
But intrestingly, a complete RN sub campaign would require the PTO as they served there also...so I dunno.
On the contrary, the ATO and what was needed to make a complete ATO in SH4 was offered with the Uboat add-on....check out Operation Munson by Lurker. All that is needed is the required interface and a fleetboat for the PTO. Given the same files as the ATO received in SH4, SH5 could very easily carry the PTO. However, I do agree that British boats would be very cool.

I don't actually believe this will happen. The reason they did this with the 1.5 Add On for Silent Hunter IV was a business decision. Sales figures have clearly told Ubisoft that U Boats in the Atlantic is far more profitable for them than Fleet Boats in the Pacific. That's why SHV is a U Boat game.

So I don't think fairness will come into play here. I don't think they'll create a Fleetboat Add On, because I don't think they see such a more as profitable.

I'm not feeling the love here You are correct, the uboat add on was a business/revenue making decision. But hey, never hurts to ask or throw a suggestion out there.

If Ubi ever added a British boat expansion/game, everyone would have to really hone up on their targeting by eye.
IIRC, British boats had a very rudimentary torpedo aiming device. Nothing even close to the German or American TDC's. Might make it pretty frustrating for the casual gamer and auto-targeting option would be needed and waaaaay too accurate.

I would love to see a campaign add on with British boats in the Med though(I don't think there would be enough there for a stand alone game). I think it would be quite the challenge, especially if the subs are modeled realistically to present some of the challenges they faced-torpedo aiming, depth keeping problems after a torpedo was fired(I've read a few accounts of British boats broaching after firing torpedoes).

I totally agree...and remember, AVG, that the 1.5 Add On was initially an idea from the Devs to offer us as a freebie. Once the suits found out about it though, it became a purchase.

Maybe Ubisoft will let them offer it as a freebie this time if they don't think they'd make any money from it.

You guys realize you're debating the future add-ons of an unreleased title. Anything could happen.

As for the above post, Terry, you forget something. Even if the u-boats sell more, you cannot make a big uboat addon for a game that is already about uboats

I've always been a U Boat fan rather than a Fleet Boat fan, Dan. That in no way diminishes the Fleet Boat contribution in WWII, it's just that the cat and mouse drama of the U Boat war in the Atlantic is unique in my view. And because of that, a sim that accurately portrays that is much more appealing to me.

Silent Hunter V has an exciting feel about it. I'm looking forward to it.

....and the debate goes on and on

I'd settle for British playable subs if possible in the initial release and hope for further additions in possuble future add ons

I could live with British boats as well.

Actually, I think that british submarines had a pretty competent TDC - the "fruit machine". However, it only computed the director angle, not the gyro-angle. And in fact, the torpedoes could only be fired on straight ahead shots.

Note I haven't dug very deep into this, so I could be wrong. The British report
on U-570 hints that British subs are capable of doing straight and 90 degree shots, but nothing in between
them.

Based on this comment I would say British boats are not forthcoming.

British subs? Don't get me wrong, I admire the british navy in ww2 more than the american one, but by gameplay standards, a british sub campaign would lack the punch. What's the fun in a sub game if you're not up against a big fleet? The british, americans and japanese had imense fleets, and they were used very efficiently and ruthlessly, that's why it's so fun and scary to play against all of them. The first months of the PT with the americans are almost as apocalyptic as the late years of the AT. An american expansion (or new game) is clearly the way to go but this time I'd love to test my skills as a japanese too (even just one class of sub, not midget or airplane hangar). I'm already scared.
