From another thread about systems and graphic cards...
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=101690

My system:
High Performance Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.40 GHz
Chieftec LCX-01 Workstation
LC-POWER 550W, 120mm, 14 dB
ASUS P5B Deluxe, P965, DDR2/GLAN/RAID/1394a/WiFi motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.40 GHz / 1066 MHz, 4 MB
Kingston HyperX DDR2, 800 MHz CL4, 2x 1 GB
ASUS EN8800GTS TOP/HTDP/512M
Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
2 * Maxtor DM 21, 250 GB, 7200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA II
Lite-On SHM-165P6S DVD Writer, 16x DL
Lite-On DVD-ROM, 16/48x, bulk
Multi Reader 15-i-1, intern, USB 2.0
1.44 MB floppydrive
Standard Cooler, 120x120x25, 26 dBA
Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse
D-Link DI-624 108Mbit Wireless Gateway
ViewSonic 19" LCD 1280*1024 max

I used to have a BFG 1gb video card IIRC, but it broke down, and my usual pc shop didn't have another 1gb video cards at the time (March 2009). But they explained me that that having the extra 512mb wouldn't really render much better graphics. The GPU is of greater importance. So even though, my video ram was half of what I had before, the speed of the GPU was increased.

2 3/4 year old rig:
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
E6600 (2x 2.4GHz)
4GB mem
XFX 8800 GTX XXX 768MB (O.C. version with 630MHz CoreSpeed)
2x Super Talent Ultradrive GX 128GB in RAID0 for OS and some games (@Racerboy: In comparison WD VelociRaptors are extremly slow and extremly LOUD)
Windows Vista 64 Ultimate (SH3+SH4 work without any problem)

As long as I can play every blockbuster game with max. details with the displays native resolution (1280x1024, it´s a 19" touchscreen) with at least 25fps (slowest fps with Crysis is 27) I won´t upgrade anything. Besides, I´ll wait for the next generation of Nvidia cards. The 300 series will hit market soon.

I have a 1GB HD5870, they are pretty cheap now so I will probably get a second and set up Crossfire.

82.22% of voters state they have 512MB or more of graphics RAM, so I'd say that's the direction to be taken with the sim's development.

"optional" just means what it will borrow from your systems ram which they will all do when they run out of onboard ram so the "optional" ram specs is meaningless and is just used as a selling ploy to confuse people.

dedicated ram = onboard ram (ram that you really have)

optional ram = what it will borrow from your system (smoke & mirrors term used for marketing purposes)

Sure, but as long as I don't have a 64 bit O/S installed, i can just as well dedicate the 768 MB of ram to my graphics card since Vista 32 can't handle more than 3 GB. I just don't think that it will make any difference since the regular ram probably doesn't make it faster.

BFG 9600 GT OC 512 MB Graphic card

Pushed by AMD Phenom X4 9500 processor.

( probably cheaper now )

Mothered by: Asus M3N78 PRO Motherboard.

Followed by 4 Gigs Crucial DDR2 PC2-6400 RAM.

I just hope it's enough. If I can't push SH5 wide open well I can come pretty close I think.

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB. Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.5GB, 4GB RAM. SH4 and Rainbow Six Vegas runs fine on this. Just hope SH5 can run on this.

Ati RADEON X-1950 XTX 512Mb

A bit old, but was pretty much top shelf when I bought it. Am thinking of going for dual cards when I replace it.

As for CPU, a dual-core Athlon 64 FX-62 @ 2.8GHz w 2GB RAM.

I got all of this back in 2006, so some components are a little old now.

Suppose I might think of building a new one some time, or just replacing video card in the interim.

FYI, anyone wanting to look into graphics cards and other hardware, this is a very handy site:
