SH3 Menue Background Movie Mod

Hi @ everyone

I have done a Mod that replaces the little movie in the background of the SH3 main menue with one i have cut together from the DVD: Das Boot Uncut TV-Version

I also added the old looking, like the orginal so it fits well.

My problem is to find webspace for the ~18MB file that is not slow like... and i would also like to add it to the Subsim SH3 Mod databank.

I've created an archive of your mod, formatted so that it can also be easily installed using the JSGME Mod Installer. I also corrected spelling/grammar mistakes in the Readme. Would you like me to upload a copy to make it publicly available?

Future suggestions:

1. Make the movie fully cover the scope glass area, as the game's original movie does.

2. Create multiple movies and use a randomizing batch file to install a different movie every time SH3 is started. A similar batch file method is used by the Merchant Variety Pack Mod.

3. Make movies to replace the game's intro movie, also incorporating the above randomization idea.

I thought about that bevor i started to make the movie, the problem is after i convert the dvd format to avi or divx i have no programm to split the movie in single pictures so that i would be able to delet the balck banks. And if i do, the resize to 256*256 pixel in bink would let look the movie streched to much in the hight, so i decided to keep it that way

If u know any great freeware programm i would give it a try anyway .

Maby u checked that but my intention was to give that movie a little stoy not only to cut some good looking scens together !
( U-Boot bunker ---> drive into the atlantic ----> enemy spotted ---> emergancy dive ---> scoping out the enemy ---> next version much more fight stuff and depth dramatic)

The problem is the convertion from wmv/avi to bik, cuz its like 1/3 in datarate if the movie shall still look fine. My first try was like 10mb wmv got to 37mb in bik format..it looked awesome but i knew no one would like to download that much so i made it with half the bitrate and now it looks ok with 18mb !

If i would make like 3 or 4 of those movies to have that random option i will need a better host than rapidshare cuz they only allowed to have a filsesize of max. 50MB

but lets stay in contact about this idea i am not quite sure jet about a 50mb movie with story or random ones

I dont know if the people would like to have something like an "Das Boot SH3 Intro Movie" and even if...thay would watch it like 2-3 times max and than click it away cuz it gets anoying like all intros does......

Of course, you don't need JSGME to install from this file. It's just set up for it.

My idea is that each movie is a full story like yours. The point is that people can see a different movie every time they start up SH3. There might be other movie contributors, not just yourself.

You do not need to bundle all the movies together in a single file. One movie per file is fine and let people chose which movies they want to download.

Well, if a lot of people contribute new intros and a different intro is displayed every time the game starts up, that's a nice idea. Just look at the great reviews that were given for 2 SH3 movies released in May/June. There are threads about them on the SH3 forum here. A lot of people downloaded them. And nothing's stopping players from continuing to hit a key to bypass the intro, should they want to.

Great work. Nicely timed too, I've just uploaded a Das Boot Theme Music mod to replace the default in-game and menu music if you want the full-on Das Boot experience.
It ought to be available at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/ probably by the time you read this. File name is 'Das Boot Theme Musicpack.rar'...and yes, it's JSGME ready.
What with your movie mod, the DB speech mods, DB loading screens, DB Officers mod and this Musicpack, all you need now is for someone to throw a couple of buckets of salt water at you whilst playing SH3, and you'd swear you really were on the bridge of the U-96.

Atm i am working on the longer version and i am trying some different bitrates to get more quality in it compared to the filesize.

I also got rid of the black cinema style blanks with virtualdub ..... it looks good but a little bit streched in the hight.

The problem is that the story i have cut for the long version makes the file bigger than 50mb even if i lower the bitrate to a point where the movie gets a bad looking so i am on the search for a webspace that can give me about 70mb and still have a nice download rate.

I testet the long version allready in the sh3 menue and there is no more loading time with the 70mb version than with the default one.

Now i will add some effects to it and i will also mod the bullseye cuz i want to get rid of this overly cross-hatch on it which doesnt fit for the dark scenes of the movie.
