but I can recall that there was a II LI in 'Das Boot'
yup, in the book there was a II LI, but i think this rang wasn't a Officer, so the Commander / LI / IWO / IIWO ... not the Navigator or Radio / Sonar man, we see this for example in "Das Boot" (Movie).

At the scene in Vigo where the old man orders the Officer's to Bridge, there only goes: LI, IWO, IIWO, and Lieutnant Werner

[Edit] And the IILI was onboard for learning, because the LI should leave U-96 after this last Patrol and the IILI comes to his side.

Yes, the third watch officer was normally the navigator, an NCO!

Off-topic, the II LI was Ullman?

In the Book i can't remember, it can be.
But in the Movie Ullman was the shy Boy with the Love Story, i do not believe that he is in Constitution to act as an LI.

1WO, 2WO, Engineering Officer, Chief Quartermaster as Navigator (Enlisted).
Being as SH3 doesn't allow the Engieering Officer to also fulfill his duties as DC officer, that's what I use the "extra" officer for. One sits in the Chief Engineer slot. The other stays in DCC with a repair qual. But, for all practical purposes - they are the same man.
How to "mod" without modding. It ain't GWX, but for some things, improvization (sp?) works.
Other times Self Imposed Restrictions can also get the job done.
