I would avoid MDF.
For the ribs the easiest solution as your picture has 4 would be to buy two pre formed timber arches and cut them in half |

If you flip that picture over, it looks like the Keel of a wooden boat.
Search Craigslist in your area, look in the free section. I see boats (in terrible condition) in there occasionally. Just a thought... |
