I have RRT 1 and 2. I've played 1, but get bored after awhile. Not that I think it's boring; I've just discovered that I'm not very good at financial planning and business management.

I would have Railroads but it doesn't work on Vista. Which is weird because the demo does.

I've played 2 in gametap, and 3 doesn't work with vista either I believe.

RRT3 once caused my system to crash I mean not only ctd, but I had to set up the whole darn machine all over again ... With the patch though, it never happened again.
I've read somewhere that the 'new' (or not so new) RR-game by Sid Meyer has a more 'toy-like' look and feel to it. That has always been kind of a put down to try the game myself.

I have RRT3 and I miss Transport Tycoon, I still have it but have never been able to get it running in a non DOS based OS...

Surprised none of you have mentioned Open TTD http://www.openttd.org/en/ which takes Transport Tycoon Deluxe and makes it even better in a lot of ways (incorporates a lot of the previous hacks and other stuff too that were for TTD).

You do need the original data files from TTD though to use OpenTTD

Locomotion was not very well received by the fan base mainly as it didn't improve much on TTD, and ignored all the fan made progress to it (including the most basic essential stuff such as presignaling and the like)

As for Railroads I am not aware of any major fan mods that fixed the issues. I don't think the devs fixed much (dig up the patch logs though). I never could get into that series myself
