Yep, there is a trial version of RegVac, I'll probably be d/l that later... though the reason I'll be doing that is slightly amusing. I d/l VLC player earlier, installed and check-marked the "Context Menu" option at install. Right-clicked on a .ogg file but saw no context entry. "Hmm", I thought, "Must've forgotten to check that option." So, finding no preference choice (obviously) to add it, I uninstalled & re-installed ensuring I'd checked it this time. All fine, yes? No. lol. Now I have TWO sets of context menu entries to choose from! Apparently the software needs a re-boot to apply it's options (but doesn't tell you it needs that) and doesn't remove all its registry entries at uninstallation. Anyway - I've managed to remove said menu entries, but think I'll d/l RegVac or similar to make life easier next time!
Sometimes I wish I was half as clever as I think I am, 'cause then I'd be clever enough to realise I'm not clever enough to mess around with computers! ![]() @Sailor Steve Ha ha ha - yes, the trials & tribulations of maintaining SH3! I also bought SH3 right after release and have also never finished a career, for very similar reasons too; though more usually involving computers that seem to revel in going "boom" just as I'm getting the hang of some piece of software or other. I'm sure you know the old maxim re. "sympathy" and its location in the dictionary, so I feel no loss for the lack of it! ![]() |

Some (not that many) are a bit rough around the edges, so I've taken the liberty of removing as much of the surface noise, pops & clicks etc as I could and have also adjusted the bass/mid/treble balance.
LOL. That is how the platters sounded complete with scratches from the needle as it gouged the grooves - very authentic stuff. I bet many platter was scratched when the sea pitched the boat, sloppy sailors mishandled and especially when the ALARM! sounded and an out of control the needle arm swung wildly to the dismay of the record owner! The records were made of a material that cracked and warped. Yep, I grew up with them at home (no, not my rest home). ![]() 78 rpm materials: Early disc records were made of various materials including hard rubber. From 1897 onwards, earlier materials were largely replaced by a rather brittle formula of 25% shellac, a filler of a cotton compound similar to manila paper, powdered slate, and a small amount of a wax lubricant. The mass production of shellac records began in 1898 in Hanover, Germany, and continued until the end of the 78-rpm format in the late 1950s. "Unbreakable" records, usually of celluloid on a pasteboard base, were made from 1904 onwards, but they suffered from an exceptionally high level of surface noise. "Unbreakable" records could be bent, broken, or otherwise damaged; but not nearly as easily as shellac records. Vinyl was first tried out as a 78 rpm record material in 1940 due to material restrictions. Decca introduced vinyl "Deccalite" 78s after the Second World War, and Victor made some vinyl 78s, but other labels would restrict vinyl production to the newer 33 and 45 formats

Hi PappyCain
Yep, quite agree with your comments, but also bear in mind that at the time, the records were brand new (or pretty new). I'm old enough to have actually bought 78s at the time of release (omg - that old!) and we didn't buy them covered in scratches lol. Anyway - I haven't removed ALL the surface noise, there's still that very slight hiss that you could hear from the needle. (Bamboo or steel for this one dad? ![]() |

Hi KeybdFlyer
Ah yes! I can remember buying 78 vinyl albums myself which appeared after WWII - and inheriting my father's from his his mispent youth (Frank Sinatra etc). The pre-war material did have a hell of a lot of noise in them even new actually as the material for the 78's was poor and pre-vinyl - they broke (shattered) easly when dropped whereas my post war 78's could be tossed about (Beatles etc.). I have a collection of pre-war opera (Yikes don't run!) and were well cared for by a deceased collector. Someday I should get them digitized and remove some of the noise (not that bad as they did not have kids playing them) but I have a war to wage and my boat needs me LOL. I am glad you cleaned them up and I am sure many will appreciate. Jimbunas collection is great. How would you suggest taking the files Jimbuna assembled and place them onto a DVD or into a MP3 thingy ( can tell I am not an audiophile ) soz I can listen to them anytime without firing up the game? BTW I was in the UK last month and wished I could have listened to the WW2 era music as I drove the coastline! I fly the BoB and went to a few spots like Tangmere and could see the Channel and visualize the air combat. Needed a sound track in my head! ![]()
