Default Decks Awash

How do you set the game to allow you to run decks awash?? My watch crew always go inside when I order the boat down so I can't stay up on the bridge.

Is there a config file I need to alter somwhere?

Cheers guys

There is no file or order in-game for this. Just set your depth to 6-7m and you should be able to hide most of your boat under the water without considered submerged for the game engine.

You'll find it depends on the uboat type, some you can go no deeper than 7 metres before it counts as submerged and the crew leave the bridge. Usually the bigger subs go to about 8 metres. This can be changed in a config file but its fine as is.

I just started playing, and one of the mods I starting using is called something to the effect of 'Decks Awash & Fuel Economy' mod. It sets the periscope depth of Type IIs to where the conning tower stays submerged in rough weather, sets the 'Ahead One Third' command to the subs optimal fuel economy speed, and allows you to run decks awash by hitting the 'snorkel depth' key.

To my knowledge setting your depth to 7-8m and keeping the crew on the bridge only works in GWX....if you do it in the stock game the bridge will not be accessible. So get GWX3.0 and you will be set.

You can also go into the CFG file for the U-boat and adjust the Surface Depth setting.

Yeah but it would just be better to create a new command, mapped to another key, then there's no need to lose the mod when you get a snorkel!

But when you get the snorkel, being at surface or with deck awash are not good for the health of the crew and boat!

The same can be said for snorkel, at least untill you install the RWR on it.

Historically, post 1942 many Uboat commanders prefered to surface during the day (in mid ocean) as they could at least see their airborn enemy coming. This is both good and bad in many ways but it beats being found being a near silent plane in the dead of night via radar and the first thing you know about it is when a 24 million candle power lamp lights your boat up like a christmas tree!

The snorkel only allowed a boat to recharge below the surface or to move at a crawl (loudly due to the diesels) and in rough seas the one way valve on the top slamming shut caused hell for the crew as the engines drew cabin air.

All in all I'd prefer to run decks awash with a good watch crew and get advance warning of an enemy so I might avoid them than to get bombed out of the blue.
