They drank coke-a-cola

and other assorted soft drinks until someone came along and said how bad they are for you. You need at least a gallon of water a day for your health. Then a company hanging out by a river said, let's get on the bandwagon and bottle this stuff. Everyone wants it! Then the earth went into a huge global warming deal were these billion upon billions of empty plastic water bottles ruined the environment and started the global financial collapse that we are experiencing to day.
