Let's not forget the close ties NK has with China. Sphere of influence can be seen as just as important to China as it is to any western nation, and the chance of Cinese participation in any exchange is entirely possible.

This one hour notification by NK could lead to trouble. I know part of it is meant to measure US response to short notice events, but it could go tragically wrong.

Look its really simple. They (NK) are simply testing the resolve and intestinal fortitude of the new administration. Kind of like the school yard bully shaking down the nerd for his lunch money.

I think the new administration that North Korea is worried about is their own. Kim is apparently on his last legs, if he's still alive. The powers behind the throne don't want Kim's incapacity or death to be seen as a moment of weakness where somebody could attack.

And if you think that Kim is (was) a raving lunatic, then you join a long list of people that have fallen for his act. He's sane and cunning, but he knows that he'll get a lot more attention from the rest of the world (especially the US) if people think he's insane.

An insane dictator with nuclear weapons is a lot scarier than a cold, calculating dictator with nukes, meaning that the US will theoretically offer a lot better incentives to an insane dictator to give up his nukes than they'd offer to a sane one. That's why Kim puts on his act, and it's been very effective.

Because like he is in every other nation, Mr. Obama is considered weak on foriegn policy. His poor response to the Iranian elections is but one example. Its a test, and China wants to be part of the grading process.

China's biggest worry is the refugee problem. If things get too bad in North Korea, refugees will start streaming over the border into China, and China doesn't want to deal with them.

China will do everything they possibly can to avoid war on the korean peninsula.

NK is their buffer state between the western powers (the US foothold in SK) and China itself. Much like Russia used Eastern Europe and the poms use the channel as a buffer.

The chinese will do anything they can to avoid war because NK will lose, Korea will be reunified under an SK government and suddenly a massive US ally shares a common border with China. They won't view that very well at all. Lets face it, of any major conflict possible in the next 30 years or so, the chinese and US facing off is right up there in terms of probability.

The time to worry is when China begins putting lots of public pressure on NK. They'll do it pretty well only because they're trying to shame NK into abandoning its path.
