Why does the crash dive go to ~70m?

If you want to go to 20 meters, click "20" on the dial and order flank speed. You should get there faster. If not, blame the game.

I tried just going to 20m on flank vs a crash dive a couple days ago. The crash dive reached 20m about 20 or so seconds faster than going to flank and diving to 20m. While driving a VIIB.

That's understandable, because at crash dive you pass 20m with maximal speed and planes set for diving.
But if you order to dive to 20m, when you get near that depth, the sub will considerably slow its descend. That's why it takes longer.

Try setting some other depth, then see how long will it take to reach 20m. I tested it for 15m, with VIIC. Crash dive took 36s, normal dive at flank speed 39s. Before diving, I was going at 10kt in all tests.

But that was my point. It's realistic that way.

As Jimbuna pointed out, the easiest solution is to edit the CrashDepth in the sub file.

I used to amend mine to 25m.

Peter Cremer in U333 said the test in the baltic was to get to 20-25m in around 25 seconds.

As has also been stated, DO NOT interrupt crash dive until it has finished i.e. levelled out at the pre-set depth (default 70m). Doing so can have some screwy effects.

It is embarrasing to crash dive into the bottom though.

I've never had a problem CDing from the surface and hitting the A button at the depth I want to level out at. My sub overshoots the depth but comes back up and levels off without any problems.
I haven't tried setting a different depth on the depth gauge during a CD though. That may be an issue.

I have had depth control problems when CDing from periscope depth. My sub just keeps going down and depth control is very difficult. You have to maintain a higher speed to stay level which causes problems when trying to evade the destroyer that caused you to CD in the first place.
