Doesent really count I think but I have 100's upon 100's of hours in sailboats of all sorts and sizes on florida bay, the keys, Bahamas, even a visit by the Cuban 'coast guard'
![]() Was an avid sailboat racing enthusiast and have sailed everything from a lazer to 33 foot offshore boats. I mostly served in the capacity of navigator and tactician. Yup so old I used sextants ! and yes it was my navigation 'skills' that put us 12 miles offshore of cuba. It was a short cut ![]() That being said not being able to navigate in the SH world is stunning to me for the most part its a point and click affair.

I had the distinct pleasure to stand Lookout and Helm Watches on the USS Segundo SS-398 from 68 to 70.
A lot of memories I have from the Diesel Boats are from standing those watches One of the stunts that we liked to pull, would be to make a complete circle while underway without the Officer of the Deck noticing the course change. Now this had to be accomplished on a moonless night, no other ships on the horizon, no landmarks and the Lookouts would have to distract him so he didn't see the compass going around in a circle......... ![]() ![]() ![]()
