U-864 (Type IXD2)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sunk 9 Feb, 1945 in the North Sea west of Bergen, Norway, in position 60.46N, 04.35E, by torpedoes from the British submarine HMS Venturer. 73 dead (all hands lost). This is the only known incident in all of naval warfare in which one submarine sinks another while both are submerged

U-868 (Type IXC-40)
![]() ![]() Taken out of service at Bergen, Norway on 5 May, 1945. Transferred to Loch Ryan 30 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight. U-869 (Type IXC-40) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The boat was sunk on Feb 11, 1945 off New Jersey, USA in position 39.33N, 73.02W by Hedgehogs and depth charges from the American destroyer escorts USS Howard D. Crow and USS Koiner. 56 dead (all hands lost).

Very impressed by the sonar image of U-864.
You can make out that it's an IXD2 very clearly (you can make out the two half cylinders on the aft section!) Also looks like the Turm got blown off from the torpedo strike. But after a little bit more looking at the image. I think I found the Turm. It's laying on it's side in the debris field by the aft end. Going to save that image and highlight my findings. Very impressive photo archive you've got U796. Still got a ways to go too, Not even in the 1000s ![]() |

U-883 was the only U-boat commissioned of Type IXD/42. ![]() ![]() Transferred from Wilhelmshaven, Germany to Lisahally, N. Ireland on 21 June, 1945 for Operation Deadlight.
