Play SH3 GWX Gold exclusively.

Have a preorder copy of SH4 and a copy of SH4 UBM Gold.

Not impressed with either. Will wait for GWX4.

All the mods for SH4 are EXCELLENT.

Just not my cup of tea.

Only playing SH4 w/ RFB at the moment. Did previously play the hell out of SH3 with all the supermods too, but the bugger has frankly speaking grown a bit old on me lately...

Have never played 3. Have played the uboat missions in 4, but didn't play long enough to learn how to operate the sub, about an hour I left. Is playing 3 the same layout of the uboat missions in 4?

Also, how realistic it towards the end of the war...anything like the book "Iron Coffins." Do they give you death missions. If it's realistic you should have a hard time near the end of the war.

Currently if your desire is to run a u-boat then a fully modded SH3 is still the way to go. Full campaigns running from Keil and Wilhelmshaven, and the French bases later, harbors full of ships...more cool things than you could imagine.

And yes, the major modded campaigns make it easy early on, and easy to die young later in the war. The graphics are nothing alike, but SH3's gfx have their own charm and a lot of players prefer them. It's a whole different look and feel, and cheap these days as well.

I've just recently discovered that if I keep graphics settings to a minimum I can live with the slow frame rates, as they are mostly a problem in external views and I use those as little as possible.

I've been playing with careers in both sides, and here is what I've discovered:

1) I kind of agree with the SH3 diehards who insist that even though the graphics in SH3 aren't as good, the ambience is better. It has a certain feel that I don't get with SH4 - yet.

2) I spent hours playing SH3 the other night without ever being in a convenient position to avoid the 'save-game bugs', so I couldn't save, only to have the game crash just before I was finally ready to.

3) I'm utterly amazed at the SH4 maps. I mean the fact that latitude and longitude are always displayed, and the Kriegsmarine maps have those and the KM grids...and the KM subgrids! No more looking at a printed subgrid chart and then at the screen and saying "I think that's BF1274."

4) In summary, I stand by my original feelings. SH4 is the better platform, but SH3 is the more developed product so far. I'll keep playing SH3 and I'll keep fiddling with SH4. So far the latter game has nothing giving the depth of SH3 Commander, and we all know that after years of working on ship names I'm not going to play a game seriously that doesn't allow for that.:rotfl: Also I still hate the silly names SH4 hands out, and it's even worse for the German side.

Still, I'm excited about the future, and I'm working on my own sound mods for SH4, so I must be heading in that direction.

i like to switch the games once in a while, sh3 has a certain feeling in the way of playing that sh4 doesnt offer. sh4 on the other hand has better sinkings. but i enjoy both of them very much

I have both of them installed. I play SH3 with no external camera. Then, when I want to look at the waves, I exit the game and go to SH4. I guess it's all down to which side you want to play. Germans had ****y living conditions (maybe that's why SH3's older graphics seem more apropriate) and a hands-on targeting system (which makes the player feel like he's playing more than a game). That's why I'd rather go with them. The U-boat addon for SH4 is a bad joke because of the pooooooor implemented Notepad system . I once had a ship right in front of me at 4000m, perfectly visible but the game didn't allow me to target it for range finding because it was in a slight fog. Then I've tried Mikhayl's OLC-inspired interface for SH3 and I've never looked back. Now I'm on my fourth consecutive career, all with more than 1M tons each without saving/loading, 100% diff. I think I've lost about 100 sailors, poor souls .

I play both, poorly.
If I were a real WWII Captain, I would be in the brig.
SHIII/GWX is more fun, SH4/TMO looks better.
Here is hoping for SH4/GWX.

I played SHIII soley on my laptop when I travel. 4 does not play well at all on it. 4 for my main PC because of reasons already cited. I am chomping the bit to use a 47 inch lcd TV for a monitor and play 4 on that. I am a graphics junkie. The crew in 3 looks a bit zombi-ish and I dislike having to rotate the crews sleeping requirements. COBs or XO's job not the CO's. Also the action in 3 early on is horrifically slow. Didn't the Germans have greater success early on with blockading England? Where is that is 3? The gray pallor of the waters annoy me as well. The Med is very blue, but ubisoft seems to think that all the waters in the adjoining area are murkish. I actually get depressed playing 3, so 4 was the ticket and I hope that 5 will employ more realism that the modders currently work on.

SH4 really looks good on my 48 inch monitor; and the surround sound adds a bit also.

I bounce back and forth as well. I'll run a patrol in SH3/GWX 3, then go over to SH4/TMO/RSRD. Now that I'm delving into manual targeting, I'm realizing that the methods both countries used are completely different beasts.

Plus, when I begin to suffer burnout, I'll fire up either Fallout 3 or one of the Elder Scrolls games. But other than those, that's about all I play now.

I am not sure if Far Cry 2 is on PC, but I tell ya what it is awesome...

It would take too much time to enjoy both games to a good extend at the same time so I'm sticking with SH4 for now.

I also doubt that I will feel the urge to touch SH3 ever again when GWX4 is released
