That is/must be quite worrying

The UK got around such temptation by simply disbanding several squadrons

Contractors are slowly taking over the US military. It's going to create massive headaches for us before long.

The problem goes back to the post-Vietnam days. After that war, the Army reorganized. The guy who ran the reorganization decided that he would never allow the Army to go to war again without overwhelming public support. So he gave all the logistical jobs to the reserves. The idea was to force the politicians to call up the reserves for any major deployment, since the Army can't fight without its logistics in order. Calling up the reserves can create a big public backlash if the public isn't behind the war effort, so politicians will only do it when public support for the war is assured. So the reorganization made it so that the Army couldn't deploy without public support. It was genius.

Unfortunately, the politicians still wanted to fight wars without total public support. So they just gave the reserves' jobs to private contractors. The Iraq War has been the biggest example of this. The result is that a large part of our military force is now in the hands of glorified mercenaries.
