I have to wonder if this has anything to do with it.

Obama 'ready to drop shield plans for Russian help on Iran'

Quote:
MOSCOW, March 2 (RIA Novosti) - Washington has told Moscow that Russian help in resolving Iran's nuclear program would make its missile shield plans for Europe unnecessary, a Russian daily said on Monday, citing White House sources.
Russia has a vested interest in creating a counter balance to US influence in the South by backing Iran. That's what they have been doing, and they'll continue to do it.

Russia and Iran are not on friendly terms. When the US was the great Satan, the Soviet Union and Russia were the lesser Satan. A couple years back Russia also activly supported the international community in their talks with Iran and put some pressure on the Iranian goverment. That was before Bush, however, and before Russia started going on it's Ego Trip.

"Backing" Iran is still pretty far fetched.
