Is his name Bernard? If so that explains it all!
 He was probably out on the piss in the town, went back to sleep it off, got on the wrong boat and only woke up mid mission behind the aft torpedo tubes to find himself covered in multi colored chunks and smelling somewhat like a public urinal!  Yep, sounds like Bernard alright!
