I've once tracked Ozawas carrier force for 70 hours during the Leyte battle, sank 2 carriers out of 4+2 converted Ise's. Also saw loads of planes going back and forth above me, but the either didn't see me or didn't bother - but I wouldn't have attacked them.

I also tracked the Yamato during her suicidal trip to Okinawa, hitting her with 6 torpedoes, but she steamed away.

Never saw any surface action though.

The game's ability to deal with surface battles is very limited. The engagement ranges aren't really right, there are not torpedoes, aircraft are, well, cartoons. So it's possible to give the feel that a battle might be going on, but actually scripting it is pretty much impossible.
