I think most ingame mine encounters occur during time compression. Your boat is flying along at 1024 and bam!, youre dead.

If you struck a mine, I would guess theres no survivng. Since you lived maybe it was just a glitch.

If machine guns from merchants can lay down some serious damage, I am thinking a mine should be insta-death.
