Well, what you should do depends on if you are running the game vanilla-style or if you have any mods.
With TMO, I think 3/3 ahead is the most fuelefficient speed but with vanilla, 1/3 ahead is the most fuelefficient speed. I think you can check how far you can go at a certain speed by pressing "Shift+G". Good luck
