Default The longest Career?

I'm just wondering, starting in 1939, who's had the longest career?
I've never managed to get beyond early 1943,

I've never been able to get past March '41 and I've had this game for ages.

Someone had posted the history of an actual uboat and it had gone on about 7 patrols and sunk maybe 7 ships. A few missions it had not sunk any. I notice that in playing the game the ship sinkings and tonnage seem to be much more than in actuality.

I read a log from a uboat captain that someone here linked to. In his log he would mention about steamers present but dawn was approaching so conditions for attack unfavorable. So he didn't attack. He also preferred to attack at range to be far enough away to escape escorts. Myself, so far I tend to take what would be called unnecessary risks figuring that the worst that can happen is I have to start a new career.

After a couple of close calls that I put myself in that I am certain a real life captain would not have done. I have been thinking that the best way to survive would be to only attack when comditions are at there best. This would also bring my tonnage totals more in line with actual tonnage.

Possible guidelines that I am thinking of using.

1:Only attack at night
2: Never attack in calm waters
3: Never attack at depth of less than 100 meters
4:In Convoys only attack outer row from range of 1500 meters

The trouble is I find it terribly difficult to ignore convoys that don't meet the above parameters. I also am not sure about the chain of command. Was it entirely up to the captains discretion or did he get radioed orders about convoy at this location. Intercept and engage?

I recall getting to early 1944 in one career, but it was getting pretty hairy. I figured anyone this lucky deserved to see the post-war era so I took mercy on that alter-ego kaluen and snuck him across the border into Switzerland.
