Maybe I should start coloring my links from now on.

Or what else are you refering to? I really didn't thought anyone will find my post funny, I was just trying to find out which map banjo was refering to.
I figured you were not trying to be funny, and that is what made me ROFL. An unintentional double entendre.

If you are in the early years before radar, and on patrol defined to a particular area, your best way to search is by sonar. You can hear boats beyond visual range and it is more efficient than using lookouts, ecspecially at night.

Even later in the war this is a viable tactic, I often find ships through the occassional sound check though all other methods had failed.

RFB 1.52, RSRDC

the stretch of water between Peleilu and the Phillipines is positively teeming with Jap. ships in '42, 43 and into 1944.

I call it "Tanker Alley" for obvious reasons.

Straits of Formosa, Bungo Suido.

Any decent map of the Japanese supply and maritime routes should give one a rough idea of the best stakeout points.
