Check the stuff on the WW2 Japanese maritime fleet.
Only 10% of the fleet survived WW2 according to LLoyds..

the US destroyed more japanese shipping by dropping mines from b-29's than with the submarines.
read the Fischer-Troppsch archive on mines.. read the above book, it is quite nice and has very good pictures too. keltos
