But when Rome fell, we lost entire vistas of information that we're just now recovering. If they hadn't been destroyed, we could have been driving cars 150 years ago...
That's a definite point, although that might have not always worked in our favor. Imagine WW1 protagonists, who never met a weapon they didn't use, having nukes at their disposal for example...

What I was thinking of is that Europe was reasonably lucky to have come out of the dark ages intact enough to experience the Renaissance. There's no guarantee that would happen after another dark age, especially one on a world wide scale.
