I don't recall the date, or whether the shell was from an escort or from a deck gun of a tanker, etc. I think the hole was severe enough to be able to look down into the forward torpedo room when you were standing on deck. It was early in the war I am fairly sure.

Yeah, that was the one I was thinking about. Took a hit at the foward hatch. It was 2000 miles from Exmouth Gulf. Angler was the sub sent to help and went to Exmouth with Bergall.
For some reason I thought it was earlier on in the war, date was Dec. 13, 1944, arrived at Exmouth with Angler on Dec. 20th. One lucky boat and crew. |
