The japanese didn't use many subs, so you probably don't find others.. IRL a sub is very hard to spot so they wouldn't spot one and other that much anyway.

I once found a Japanese Midget Submarine "anchored" in harbor during a photo recon in Tokyo Bay. So it is possible, but just as difficult as it should be to find yourself.

I believe you can find it in the Museum (the main menu entry).

I once came across an American Sub. It was pretty cool. Radar picked up a contact. I got closer and closer without seeing anything. I thought the game was messing with me. Finally, I spotted it. Subs are harder to see than the bigger boats we're used to spotting and they sit low in the water.

This makes me wonder...I never come across neutrals or friendlies other than near home port. Has anyone ever sunk a friendly accidently, or for that matter, seen friendlies in the open water? Last night I sunk a boat and on the nav map it's marker was grey rather than the usual red. It was night in very stormy seas and I did a sonar only attack ..I never saw the boat, so when I saw the grey marker, I wondered if I just sunk a friendly. Again, I've never seen one so the possibility of a friendly never entered my mind. Hope I don't go home to a court marshal!

I think a gray marker can indicate an "unknown" vessel once sunk. I've seen these before when, as you said, operating in really bad weather.
