Default The Ocean Floor - Not So Far Away

Well, I was cruising in the deep waters off the Marshall Islands in January 42', when all of a sudden I ran aground on a hidden reef! The game gave me no time to free myself before declaring mission failed!

I was/am ticked. I know I would've been able to free myself - in the closing scene I saw my sub sliding back into the water!

Didn't this happen to a sub in real life?

Absolutely, In fact, several subs. I believe a couple are still on the reefs. There are some pics on the web of a sub that you can still see today. I'll see if I can get the link, or someone else knows. I've always been afraid of running between islands with shallows because of the chance of running aground. I also try and go to 1/3rd in shallows like that, you just never know.
Sorry about your sub mate, you'll be in front of someone's desk when you get back to Pearl.

Great movie.

Oh and about the incident that started this thread... looks like another time-compression related problem - meaning: you were going so fast that you never saw the obstacle!

Often TC will drop when you get near land, but seems the smaller the mass, the game doesn't see it. Some reefs don't even show until you zoom in, so be careful.

Been there done that but I didn't sink.
But the boys in the forward torpedo room didn't buy me a beer when we reached Pearl.

Anthony! OMG ('cause I can't say "Holy----")
I was tooling around the Marshalls in my new Gato (I got Promoted), anyway, I can't name the particular island at the moment but all of a sudden I hear the most horrible screeching sound (Metal on Metal, breaking glass ect), my teeth almost shattered (I'm using headphones, volume 10). Apparently we hit bottem.
My Nav map was zoomed way in, and I was sure by the map that we had at least 290'. The first thing I thought of was "I wonder if this is the same place that Anthony hit"?! Anyway,The shoal is not off the named island, but off a satellite island a bit north of the main island. I'm going to go back and find the spot and post a pic to see if this could be the same spot.
Cheers and good hunting.

PS: I was able to reverse and clear it. We have significant damage but are able to continue with mior repairs.

Well, it is realistic. The Pacific was hell. The japs had every shoal and sandbar mapped and memorized. No so for us.

Trust me. The Japanese struggled with the same inaccurate maps as the Allies.

December 13th 1941 the Japanese cargo ship Nikkoku Maru is stranded and wrecked off Hainan Island, 18°00'N, 110°00'E.

December 29th 1941, the Japanese submarine RO 60, returning from the Wake Island operation, is irreparably damaged by grounding, Kwajalein Atoll, 09°00'N, 167°30'E.

January 12 1942, the destroyer Asagumo is damaged when she runs aground off Tarakan.

January 16th, the Japanese cargo ship Taishu Maru is wrecked when she runs aground off Okushiri Island, Hokkaido.

January 17th, the Japanese transport Fukusei Maru is stranded and wrecked off Yangtze Estuary.

February 9th 1942, the Japanese carrier Kaga is damaged when she runs aground on an uncharted reef, Palau, Palau Islands.

February 17 1942, the Japanese destroyer Ayanami is damaged when she fouls an uncharted reef 2.4 nautical miles off Durai, Anambas Islands.

February 25th 1942, the Japanese cargo ship Fukushima Maru runs aground on a reef and is wrecked, Katsura Bay.

And that's just the first three months of the war.

Quite a few times, even today.

in 1996 a North Korean Sang o class submarine ran aground and was captured.

Here you can see the damage, that circle thing on the ground was the shroud for her prop.

Another one grounded and was captured in 1998

The USS San Fransisco collided with a seamount in 2005

HMS Astute ran aground earlyer this year.

HMS Trafalgar grounded in 2002

USS Hartford grounded in 2003

HMS Superb hit an undersea rock in 2008

Don't the North Koreans have a problem with those Sang O class subs being caught by fishermen?
