My first experience with GWX3.0 Gold

After so long playing the stock version of SHIII I was repeatedly told by folk "why don't you upgrade to GWX?" ,my answers were simple "I am still using a dial up connection, and to download such things would probably leave me a tired exhausted old man".That was before a kind person in here (nikbear),in fact there have been a few kind souls in here offered to put everything I need on discs, together with loads of mods to play around with.My prayers were answered,as today my shipment finally arrived
You know what my first impression was when I got GWX installed and looked at it? "oh...my...god" , that is all I kept muttering to myself for the first 30mins,as I simply sailed around in the academy section, going through the navigation tutorial again, while admiring the bloody amazing new visuals, and sounds. The first time I ordered a crash dive I nearly s##t myself! ,bloody awesome atmosphere, thats what THAT is!.

Below is a list of the other things that blew me away the first time,if I can remember them all
- The immediate impression I got from the new camera views, they seem smoother and more personal in some way.
- the dials,everything is bigger,clearer,and better,the slide outs are a great addition.
- the uniforms are much better,I particularly like the black leather jacket, and more variety in general.
- the absolutely incredible camera tilt as you dive and surface, absolutely fantastic in a crash dive!.This and the sounds from the crash dive had the most impact on me I think.
- the sound of the ballast blowing is absolutely amazing.
- again,I couldnt believe the excitement and adrenalin I felt during my first crash dive,as the crew scrambled to battle stations!
- repeat!
- the intro footage and music at the beginning is absolutely brilliant, almost sad too,the music is perfect for instilling sadness and pity on the submariners
- ships look great too,more detailed,colourful,realistic
- the sound of things snapping on board ships you just hit, like a wire snapping is a great touch
- explosions look great, love the reflection of fires in the water
- deck gun sounds awesome this time, more beef in it
- sound of tubes opening,brilliant
- creaking noises - brilliant

I could go on and on and on,but I am still drying my pants here from all the excitement,so I need to keep an eye on them for the time being.I really cant actually find the perfect words, other than "pants wetting brilliant!"

I will be back with other comments about GWX Gold later and in the near future, but for now "GREAT BLOODY WORK TO ALL THAT MANAGED TO PULL THIS OFF!"

Now that is out of the way,I shall start with my first proper post about GWX 3.0 Gold.
I just need to know what to do next, sorry I have to ask,but I havent got time to go through all the manual tonight, will do that over the weekend
Below is the installation procedure I carried out,let me know if it was correct -

- removed all traces of my old SH3 files, save games etc
- installed clean install of SH3
- patched to 1.4
- installed JSGME
- installed main GWX Gold files

I now need to know, can I install my Commander 3.2 (or 3.3 is it,its the latest one I have, the one with patrol editor) straight over this now,and load the game like before with Commander?.
And regarding mods,as this is the first time I will have used JSGME I will load just 1 mod at a time, try it in game, repeat with other mods, until I get a possible conflict, then the culprit can be isolated.I am not expecting problems, but that is the safest way to carry out the modding installation I expect.

All that remains now,is to start back in 1939.A daunting task, but I have no doubts now that exciting times lie ahead

Thanks for any advice here

Yep, you installed it right, and you should not have too much problems loading multiple mods, as long as you installed GWX right, Im not sure about commander though, as I don't use it.

First thing you will notice in your new Career is the abundance of new Radio messages that will appear, for immersion purpose's you might find these a bit annoying if you start another career down the road from now when you have already seen them, you can disable these by removing your radio man from the crew screen, just a tip.

Just regarding Commander 3.2,

As there are already many changes and additions to the career aspect ( I have still yet to see this) would there be any reason to even use Commander?.The only reason I used Commander, and enjoyed it for this, was options like, starting out at sea, opacity settings of the water,*choose your start date*,and things like, random names of the captain,captain's/crew roster, end of patrol report, patrol editor.

Are any of these included by default in GWX Gold,or at least emulated/uses its own version?

Thanks

Right I got the latest commander config files and installed them.

So that is now,in the order I did it -

- clean install
- patched to 1.4
- installed latest JSGME tool
- installed GWX main files
- installed Commander 3.2
- installed Commander config files (unsure of exactly what this does)

So now all that remains is to enable some or all of the mods that come with the GWX Gold package, which I have to say already looks quite impressive, and is good of the team to include them for us , and also a few more I may find along the way.

Just a few queries about the actual GWX version now

- performance wise, there is loads more to render, naturally making it more demanding on our systems,so I have had to decrease my anisotropic filtering settings to half, and disable anti aliasing completely. Not a problem as games still look great at these settings.

- and the rotating device on the conning tower,is that actually the radio antenna? . Surely it can't be a radar antenna,im back in 1939.

Thanks for your help

Paul, the rotating loop is the radio direction finder.

Thanks HW3

I can't believe the lengths the GWX team has gone to with this, the level of detail is staggering,I honestly think from what I have seen so far it puts Ubisoft to shame, and Ubisoft are probably the best and one of my fav games companies.
I think the only gripe I have, and I feel bad for saying it as there is far more for the PC to process this time, and that is the quite long loading times, more noticable in the museum, but when I first checked out the museum I found out why,the added units is massive.I can't believe I even saw a bloody V2 rocket in there!
I can't praise them enough.
