It's all over ESPN.com, but here's a link to the original story:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?...nfl&id=3013255

Since then it's been determined they were in fact stealing signals using a camera but they are giving the Pats a chance to defend themselves before deciding on a punishment.

Ho ho! Man, the Pats got zapped a good one for cheating!

Quote:
New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for spying on an opponent’s defensive signals.

The commissioner also ordered the team to give up next year’s first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn’t.

That'll learn 'em. Tuck that!

For the severity of the infraction I think the penalty was pretty harsh. It's not like coaches don't change their signals, and it's not like it gave them some huge advantage. To lose a first round pick is pretty substantial (because we all know the pats are going to make the playoffs) and $500,000 is no drop in the bucket, even for a well paid coach. I mean, if anything I think the comissioner was so harsh because of the principle of the violation, rather than the violation itself. I mean, technically what they were doing was cheating, regardless of how little advantage they actually gained. I think that's why he made the punishment as harsh as he did. In the grand scheme of things though, stealing defensive signals is pretty tame in my opinion.

I understand what you're saying but I think you need to consider how much this has tarnished those three superbowl rings. IMO in addition to the sanctions they recieved they should have had sundays win taken away or Belichick should have been suspended for a few games.

Heh, my lass supports the Pats, and naturally I brought this up. She said "Every team does it, even yours"

My retort was "Thats why Jake Delhomme keeps getting sacked and Tom Brady never has been?"

The whole "stealing signals" controversy appears every 5 or 6 years in baseball also.

More than likely

Coach Fox wants a roof over the practice ground in Charlotte because of the surrounding skyscrapers, too :p

http://www.nfl.com/scores

Down in the bunker today, ready for week 2. I guess this is the year of the scandal! Brady better not screw up today, as he will ruin my fantasy team. He saved my butt last week.

Must win game for me: Vikes vs Lions. Raiders lost to them last week

I want to wear my vikes hat with pride this week!

Then, speaking of shame! Eagles losing to those elderly packers Beatings for all!

Game of the day: Pats v Chargers. So how will the Pats do w/o the video?:rotfl: :hmm: Next time, hire the KGB.

Raiders v Broncos: The hair clippers are circling the Steven's household?
Or should I say how will go winless longer? Notre Dame or Oakland Raiders ?

Wait, did Neal just walk by wearing a Texan's hat?

All I know is that I am starting Delhomme this week, and am pretty happy thus far.

That's not nice Mr Chris, but funny ...

I stole a lot of food from grocery stores when I was a hungry street person back in the 80's, but I only got caught once.

Thirty days in the county jail taught me a leason not to do that anymore.

I think the same wisdom will apply to New England ...

Go Chargers ... cheaters never win

I can't find KBG in the wikipedia encylopedia ... you meant KGB, right?

KGB
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KGB (transliteration of "КГБ") is the Russian abbreviation for Committee for State Security (Russian: Комите́т Госуда́рственной Безопа́сности Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), which was the umbrella organization serving as the Soviet Union's premier security agency, secret police, and intelligence agency, from 1954 to 1991.

P.S. I just found this ... it doesn't look good for the Pats:
