Practice/getting used to it. I headbang alot when I be drunk, put some metal on and go all over the house. The only thing I've noticed is that it lowers drunkedness (is that even word?).

And then there's the kinetic energy from the hair, easier to do it with long hair as the hair "leads" the way.

Anywho, just came to give more Stam1na and ended up replying to Schröder, love the video and music:

(too bad most of you can't understand the lyrics, Stam1na, along with many many other finnish bands make pretty unique lyrics )

As a professional headbanger I can answer that

It's all technique. If you haven't got experience, you probably would get a headache.

First of all, you need hair. Ideally something like shoulder length. Not that you can't bang your head without, but if you it to look good you need hair.

Secondly, it's not just throwing your head up and down. Try to move your head in a sine, slowing down before you throw your head into the other direction, afterwards slowly accelerating again. Too fast acceleration/deceleration is a sure way of getting a headache.
Also the "frequency" is very important, you head sort of needs to resonate with your hair. It doesn't come too narrow, but too slow and your hair won't do anything at all, too fast and your hair will just bounce a bit in front of your face.

Thirdly, use your body. Don't stand straight up, preferably stand with your torso bowed forward, knees bent and hands on your knees for the easiest headbanging. If you don't bow forward, there's no way you're gonna get that hair across your face if you're not experienced enough.

Next, there are different styles of headbanging, there's among others:

-"classic" headbanging (see 2:59)
Just bouncing your head up and down. Ideal for slow headbanging (about 60 BPM). Also good for inconsistent riffs: you can throw your hair up high on a loud chord and don't throw it up at all on a soft chord, without stopping the rhythmic motion of your head, thereby putting no extra strain on your neck/head.
Also good for concerts as you can do it in a pretty compact way without constantly swinging your hair into your neighbour's face

- Windmill (0:57-1:01)
Good for fast headbanging, you can easily go twice as fast as the classic way, personally I can windmill at over 200 RPM for short amounts of time.
Does need some experience to not get extremely dizzy though

- Half circle (my favorite, can't really find it in any vid though)
Essentially classic headbanging including a side-to-side motion. Also great for fast songs, as the added horizontal motion gives your head a longer path to invert its movement direction, thereby drastically decreasing the shock. You can even bang faster (>120 RPM) by moving your head in an 8, completely eliminating any sudden inversions in movement directions.

And lastly, perhaps the most important rule:
DRINK!!!
If you don't drink anything, you'll soon feel the results. Preferably non-alcoholic drinks, but anything's better than nothing.
