Holy Schmooks. I just looked at one of my cell phones and it has a radio, video storage, music storage, camera for stills and video, voice recorder - and that might just be good enough? Am 63 and never have read a manual on anything in my life. Perhaps I should?

I remember making a crystal radio at the Juvenile Deliquent Center (Boy's Club) in 1956 or so!

Manuals are for girls. It's like asking for directions. Have to be lost first.

Yea cell phones are pretty amazing. When I was a kid we had party line phones. I just recently learned how to send a text. I feel like a dinosaur but it is cool to learn new stuff. My 12 year old grandson puts me to shame.

Does that ham radio pick up messages from BDU?

When I was a kid, we had this tube radio (wish I had it today!)

Then one day, I remember a big stir on the street as a delivery truck arrived with a B&W TV set, a real beauty. About the same size as the radio. Back then in NYC we had 3 or 4 stations and eventually Channels 2,4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. Test patterns, then the star spangled banner and the broadcasting day would start around 6AM. By midnight most were shut down. Golly we were so modern and high tech!! Most shows were live with all the goofs. But I remember still listening to the radio as most of the radio folks then moved to TV. Yep we had a party line too. Then a car showed up - first one in our family! 1950 Ford.

I used to hear stories from my parents and grandparents how good us kids had it compared to their day. But we still made our toy guns from wood and bullets were cut from truck tire tubing. It hurt when shot. (yep and sling shots too! always outside playing hard, not dweebing. LOL)

I dunno. This new technolgy stuff changes every week and I have lost interest now. But I can see the kids loving it.

Let me know when they implant microprocessors in your neck - soon I bet.

Oh, I never ask for directions - I have a GPS thingy that yells at me to turn. Just like having a wife!

Sometime around 1960 my dad bought our first color TV. The NBC peacock. Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color (replaced the older Disneyland show). "If you need to adjust the color, do it during a commercial or a football game. They're the ones who work hardest to get it right."

Those things were not easy to carry around.

My daughter has a similar one, a Marconi, that my Uncle gave her. It belong to my grand parents and ran on a 6 volt car battery. In my case, my life long love of music began on a transistor radio. It weighed about 3 pounds and took 4 C size batteries. Wish I still had it. In the winter late at night you could pick up stations from southern states. It was magic.

Yea, makes you wonder what's coming. I already have that implant. It's set on old and slow.

I remember that effect! Thanks for reminding me! Wolfman Jack at midnight!

Forever and a day my dad had a huge console stereo with built-in record player and a radio with enough bandwith (a different meaning from the modern internet concept) that at the lower end of the band we could pick up transmissions from the L.A. airport. I remember waiting until I was tall enough to see over the top of the thing. He also had a short wave reciever that could pick up local police and fire transmissions, as well as some public stations from other countries.

Those were good days indeed.

Oh yeah. I had a portable radio the size of a shoe box that I stuck under my pillow and I used to pick up radio stations from way down south in Texas or Alabama! AM station - no FM in those days. I guess AM had stronger signals and when FM came out they were small local stations.

I remember the delight in one particular talk show from down South. Man, what in heck are those people saying??? If you weren't from NYC, fugetaboutit.

When we got our first color TV zowie!, Disney, Bonanza!!! Unbelievable!!

I have to change my batteries now, seems like my pacemaker is slowing down and I need some ice cream to ramp it up. Preferably a bannana split with extra whip cream.

Oh man, lets all put our rockin' chairs in a circle!

Yes Steve I remember those monster consoles. They did every thing but wash the dishes. Now you can put all that and an internet connection in your pocket.

Times have changed.

My drink of choice has for decades been the Freeze - A shake made with soda instead of milk, or alternately a float whipped to the consistency of a shake. I make mine with Dr Pepper, but Black Cherry soda or Sprite are also cool. Call it what you will, I call it scrumpdiddlyumptious.

Great solution Pappy.

I really like the red one, Steepletone Roxy 3, on the second link. Very sharp.

Wish I still had all my old LPs.
