Victrola in a pocket?

I keep seeing this thing called MP3 this and that. Sounds like a mini recorder.

I really hate airports and international flying with the filthy planes, surely waitresses, screaming kids and general third world goats and chickens they call passengers so I was thinking ...

Can Jimbuna's wonderful collection of Victrola era music somehow get shoved into a MP3 gadget? Sure would make for a better experience and I won't have to pray for the plane to crash in the mid Atlantic anymore!

There are several free converters that will make any sound type into any other sound type. The only one I remember offhand is www.goldwave.com.

Gargamel 03-08-12 11:52 PM

NCH software also has many software packages for free 30 day Evals. I go to them for any one off use, or even to buy sometimes. They specialize in audio and video

PappyCain 03-09-12 02:15 PM

Thanks fellers. Is this the thing I need to do? Convert .ogg to Mp3? Isn't Vorbis the best possible sound emulation and that is why Jimbuna used it? ( I really do not know what I am talking about ).

http://www.oggtomp3converter.com/

then what happens? it goes into my PC, then somehow I need to plug the MP3 thingy in (USB?) and download into that. Sheesh. I miss my Victrola and platters. LOL

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...lickid=prod_cs but is says MP4 ????? something different ???? I clearly do not want to spend a lot of money on some gizmo I would hardly use I think. Unless there was a way to get 'audio books' on it!

Can you stick stuff into your phone? or do I need to go to Radio Shack and buy a MP3 gizmo? I think the Mp3 gizmo lets me load movies too?

I really do not like all this geekenheimer technology stuff. Ok for the grandkids! LOL

To be honest, your right. Give he grandkids a call and have them help set you up with what you need. It's difficult for us to help you with hardware as we are t there. But we will do what we can.

Hi Pappy. You sound like me. An old guy at war with technology. I'm losing this war. Anyway, I'll tell you what I know. Don't worry, it won't take long.:har:

I have an iPod and iTunes loaded on my computer. iTunes is a free download. Any music files you have can be played on iTunes. I plug the iPod into my computer with USB cord, make a playlist on iTunes and the chimps do the rest. I assume this would work with any Mp3 player but don't know for sure.

Hope this has been some help. Good listening. :salute:

Grandkids ... I have to tell you this story because it still makes me laugh!

The companies I consult provide me cell phones. I just get this whiz bang cell phone from a client with a bazillion useless features (to me).

I just want to be able to answer an important business call as it is global business.

So we take a boat trip in the harbor with 8 of us and a kid who was all of ten. He grabs my cell phone and I see him fooling with it and I panic.

He says no problem and continues hitting buttons and I am freaking out on the ocean like never before but maintaining my cool for my guests. OMG he screwing up my phone!!! My business!!!

About ten minutes later when we pull into a cove and stop he hands me back the phone and say 'watch!'

He made a movie of our trip, edited it professionally, added a music track. I mean it was excellent.

I am still freaked out with just answering one of these cell phones or trying to make a call. I have each phone's telephone number duct taped to the back because I cannot find the numbers on the display thingy.

Meanwhile a 10 year old kid makes a Hollywood Production on a stinkin cell phone.

No wonder I like SH3, this WW2 technology is about valves, trim, station keeping, navigation, sea state and managing crew and staying alive while executing orders. This I understand. LOL

Downloading ITunes ... :arrgh!:

Yes. I had a look at that program and it works both ways. You need to convert the mp3s to .ogg, and the thing you linked to will do it just fine. :sunny:

Ok. I found the solution. It is a cell phone, MP3 player, video monitor, internet access HELMET:

Will this device be available in a variety of styles and colors? I'd like a blue one with heavily padded interior. Also running lights and a coffee maker. :O:

Hi fellers,

I downloaded a free MP3 audio book off the internet. When I click on the file it opened to ITunes which played it ... so then I must buy a small pocket Victrola next and transfer the file into it? It would be nice to listen to audio books again, or Puccini, or Swing music. Am I on the right track now???

1. Download free stuff (or buy it)
2. Transfer files into gizmo via USB (just need the MP3 file not ITunes right? ITunes looks like a rip off store with audio books as high as $37.00!!!)
3. Lock out the world

Hi Pappy.

Yes I believe you are on the right road. These pocket Victrolas are very cheap to buy or you could probably use your cell phone. I just looked at mine and it has a earphone jack and USB port. I 've never tried it as I have an iPod that my son gave me. I use it when I go for walks. Just don't sing along, people look at you like you're crazy! :haha:

Just read your edit. iTunes is just a media player for computers. You can buy stuff but you don't have to to use it. I play music on my laptop on it. I believe it will only transfer music to an Apple device like an iPod. Check this link out. You will probably have to get your device first then use the proper application.

Sailor Steve 03-11-12 01:03 AM

Yes, iTunes is a ripoff. There are free converters that let you change the file formats without paying anyone any money! Just get one and do it. It's easy.

PappyCain 03-11-12 05:36 AM

Thanks fellers. I finally get it.

"Your portable MP3 player no doubt came with special software for managing music. Although these steps get you through basic music synchronizing using Windows Media Player, you might still need to use the MP3 player's extra software to help manage your music, remove tunes, or organize how the music is played."

That dummy link was perfect.

I still have my Sony Walkman cassette/radio which is the size of a brick and my Sony CD Walkman ... LOL

Now to go out and find a mini thingy that I can load up stuff without carrying all those disks and cassettes.

(By the way, I tried the pasta colander on my head with rabbit ears and did pick up NPR "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers!" and "Praire Home Companion").

:salute:

How does this puppy look - seems to handle many formats. Looks like I can load SH3 music, video clips, & Jimbuna's stuff. More than I wanted to spend actually ...

Morning Pappy. Yea that looks like a good one. It's a buyers market. 4GBs is about 1000 songs. I've seen some for half that price but without the video.

Since you still got that Walkman you'll probably have this one for a while. :har:

Might as well get a good one.
