Sometimes I allow myself to do something that's obviously silly, but I just wanna see what would happen. In which case, I do save the game and then try the silly task. In which case, whether I am successful or not, I would revert back to my last save.

The other night I was tracking a lone target and when I finally was close enough to make a visual contact I saw that it was a little coastal fishing boat. I had a good firing solution and wondered what it would look like if a torpedo hit a fishing boat, sooooo....

Obviously when I saw the target was a trawler and knew the seas were too rough for deck gunnage; I would've just broke off the attack and moved on. Which I did when I restarted the game.

Dead is dead. I agree, with the exceptions mentioned, like getting up to see what is my daughter doing and similar things that happens when you think that no one is in your area... in other words, when you are not resposable of the error that send you to the bottom.

Once I tried to play a little drunk believing that the DD would not detect me. He send me to the bottom in a matter of seconds, so in the next morning I resumed my campaign in the last save before I went to the pub.:rotfl: :rotfl:

Don´t sail drunk, not to mention a convoy attack!:rotfl:

I feel sick to my stomach to see the Abondon Carreer page and to delete the Profile, but I do it. I do it knowing that when I do sink a capitol ship and live to tell about it I have a sense of acomplishment and not a cheap thrill. Granted, I'm on Captain #8, but this last go around I made it to 1940, Operation Weserabung. Maybe on the 9th try I'll make it all the way to 1945. I do manage to get furhter each time I die.

Although its sickening to die, I have to give a toast to the Tommies that got me. They pulled a rabbit out of the hat each time they killed me.

I play DiD mainly, but after a period of getting used to equipment. For example, I just got enough renown for a type IX-B, and its also my first time using one. Of course, I was sunk a few times because I wasn't familiar with its capabilites (dive times, max submerged speed, etc), so I reload a few times if I get sunk until I figure out what I'm doing wrong, and adapt (dive earlier, realize I can go deeper, etc.) In my current case, I plan to go into DiD by '40 (just departed in November '39). Of course, I follow many of the rules outlined above.

As others, if I die while actively playing (which includes running under time compression) I'm dead, otherwise I'll reload. Died too many times close to harbor due to collisions, and I'm not going to spend an hour real time to get out of the harbour.. little enough game time as it is.

But I like DiD with the above exception as it makes combat decisions that much more stressful. Without DiD I would always charge any convoy any time.

Actually, because it's the first time I play SH3(real first time), I play in "Dead is live" mode lol.
Each time I die I start again while trying to see where I made an error and while trying to find the best way to survive until the end of the war.

I'm now in 1945 and it's clear that the only way out is to escape when meeting a convoy. I sail towards the zones where there are no planes(middle AK, and after cap 180 go to DR-DS-EF-EG-EH[thanks to the map !]), and I patrol on the isolated merchants roads.
Great score without trouble.
Back home by the North of Rockall Bank, allways deep and silent.

But in the second campaign DiD will be operationnal.

i also (did) play DID i want that maximum feel to the game where by if i screw up then thats it i have to start over. it makes you cautious in the way you do things. e.g if you dont play DID you can save and then charge straight into a convoy without thinking about it really, if you play DID then you have to plan ahead so it gets you thinking about where to position yourself, what the weather is like (meaning how close you can get) what year is it (how good the dds are) etc etc. thats what gives this game the ultimate edge.

The only I ever reloaded a game after dying was when I first used the original Kiel Canal mod, and the waypoints I laid out took me right through a dock in the middle of the Canal. Other than that, saves and reloads are for when the game crashes.

Dead IS dead!

Well, I haven't been able to play in a while, so I talk, talk, talk.

Actually there are people around with higher per-day post counts; they'll catch me someday.

Dead is dead. Period. That's what the pause button is for.

I also have my old 'Aces of the Deep' ubooters guide and always play realism phase 4 or 5, as much as i am able, given that SHIII patrol areas are a lot smaller than the old 'Aces...' ones.

i play DiD too. when i die i start a new career in the next month so i continue on with the war. when the war ends i start over again in 39. that way it plays out like the actual war. i name some the the new captains after old officers that i let go from previous careers so it is like they got their own boats now and their old captain is dead.
