First you have to make sure you have a soundcard installed.
Either open up the case, and have a look inside (check the PCI-slots, see motherboard manual), or disable onboard sound through BIOS, and expect a message from XP on bootup, that hardware is missing drivers > this hardware should be the soundcard, if any in your PC. To enter the BIOS, watch the screen when you start the PC...during the 1st seconds, you will see a hint to press Del, to enter setup...this will put you into the BIOS. You have to do it quickly, because the hint will disappear fast. Once in the BIOS, you need to find the tab which has the onboard-sound setting (most likely looks like AC97) > disable it, hit F10 to save and exit, and the PC will restart. Now if you have a soundcard installed, XP will warn you that there are no drivers installed. Now you should check the cdrom that came with your soundcard, or check the manufacture's site for the latest drivers.
