I almost always kill medium to big merchant ships with one torpedo (either magnetic under keel, or impact at the bow). Bust most of the time, the small ships are a real pain to down with torpedoes (even with magnetic). This week-end, I followed a coastal merchant for nearly 3 hours after a bow impact hit (15 m/s winds so no gun, and no more torpedoes left) and it never sank, although the bow was more often under than above the water.
On the other hand, I've seen several times small merchants break in two parts with 5 to 10 gun shells under the waterline around the middle of the ship... Go figure.

maybe large merchant doesn't have a "break into 2" model? i have seen C3 and C2 in 2 pieces in GWX 2.0 but never any ship that is not in the stock game.

Ah...well I by default fire 2 torpedo's in a salvo at a Ship.
spread them out so 1 hits the bow section, the other the Mid/stern. if he floats for too long and the surface is clear I finish it off with the Deck gun HunterICX

I prefer to salvo only in convoys at the JUCIEY targets. Under normal situations I set one fish to magnetic and one to impact. Fire the magnetic first, open door on the back-up and wait. If it malfunctions I immediately fire the fish set to impact.
Generally speaking, torpedoes were very expensive and I do not want to waste them for fear of being keel-hauled by BdU. Each Kaluen has his own preference in sending a ship to the bottom. This is mine.

i don't like firing in salvo. they 2nd torp has a high chance of pre-mature explosion... i alerted a CVE because of this

As Brag mentions the AoB is paramount to 1 hit sinking a ship as a 90 degree shot isn't optimal. The 45 degree shot is optimal as it give the torpedo the longest time possible under the keel of the ship to detonate. I've managed to do that to the Hood once when it was parked in Gibraltor and was able to move around to get the perfect shot off.
During rough weather you're more likely to get (ime) a one shot kill if you can successfully get the eel to go under the keel. With the rough seas helping to increase the flood rate ships can go down fast or just plain get keelbusted. But to try and use a pure magnetic attack for a convoy during rough seas isn't a very prudent tactic with the amount of misses you'll get caused by the wave height. |
