GWX 2.0 - Cant seem to 1 shot a ship
I just made a observation that when I attack merchant ships in calm waters I use magnetic torpedoes, since they cause the most damage.
However, over and over again I cannot breack the ships back even though my shot is right on the "money" meaning right under the tower. I attacked at least a dozen ships that way but with GWX 2.0 I never downed a ship with 1 shot. I always have to send in another "fish" to finish the merchant. Granted I play "realistic" sinking and stuff, but shouldnt I have seen a ship break in half by now?? In stock SH3 1.4b patch, I "loved" seeing a ship breaking in half with one well placed magnetic torpedo. Any suggestions?? |
I have sunk a few big merchants with one torpedo so far in my current career but they have all been with a shot to the stern of the ship. The torp are always set to impact.
You could give that a go. But I will say something that is true i have never seen a ship sink the same way twice since i have been playing with GWX. So it is just a matter of time i believe before you get a ship break in half and sink like a stone on you. Happy hunting. |
I sink most of the ships by firing impact just in front of the foremast. Works most of the time.
With magnetics and an AOB of 45 or less, I aim at the forward part of the superstructure so the torpedo will explode under the aft area. This is also a one shot sinker. For more details look in my Kielman webbie. Good hunting  |
You will eventually see a ship break in half.....just a matter of time.
Don't expect to see a ship sink almost instantly very often....that is not how it happened in RL. You say you've set 'realistic sinking', therefore, make allowances for the flooding of the ship to take effect....again, as in RL http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif |
Thanks for the tips, will try that out.

Be sure to give the ships time to sink on their own.
I think most small to medium sized ships can be sunk with one torpedo quite easily. In rough seas, I tend to shoot to the bow on impact so it nose-dives and pulls itself under. In calm seas, a magnetic under the keel works wonders - but it doesn't use the stock SHIII break-in-half-and-down-she-goes model. Next time you hit it under the keel, just wait for a bit (perhaps set a course just ahead of the target at ahead slow and go to 32 TC). I think you'll find the ship will sink slowly on an even keel, but it will go down from just the one shot. |
"Be sure to give the ships time to sink on their own".
Yes, maybe if you can wait, but under stress in the middle of a Convoy attack , with the risk of be discovered and detected in the next seconds, is better to expend a second torpedo to be certain to sink this target. Not time there to look by the periscope and wait maybe 30 minutes, one, two ,or three hours to be certain of the destruction and sinking of this target. My waiting record for a ship sink ,was four days, I have hit a Greek small merchant in the bow with my last torpedo, weather was very bad to utilise the 88mm and I have started a pursuit to expect a improvement of weather.Nothing to do, weather went worse, the Greek merchant sailed at 3 knts, with a heavy bow and starboard list; was attacked by one FW200 Kondor and finally I loss the contact at the fourth day in the middle of storm and raining. Had sinked latter? I dont know. For that, and to be certain of the destruction and sinking of a target is better sometimes to expend a second torpedo. |
Hit a small merchant with one torpedo earlier today... she stopped dead in her tracks but took nearly an hour and a half to sink.
one hit sinkings can be done but they require a certain degree of patience |
Once I had to use 3 eels to sink a small merchant and on another occasion I've broken the back of one with a single 88mm round.
GWX has new surprises evey time you leave port. Stay patient, keep racking up the tonnage and you'll soon be seeing ships broken in half. |
well, hit the ship in the bow and watch it sail itselve to death

I almost always kill medium to big merchant ships with one torpedo (either magnetic under keel, or impact at the bow). Bust most of the time, the small ships are a real pain to down with torpedoes (even with magnetic). This week-end, I followed a coastal merchant for nearly 3 hours after a bow impact hit (15 m/s winds so no gun, and no more torpedoes left) and it never sank, although the bow was more often under than above the water.
On the other hand, I've seen several times small merchants break in two parts with 5 to 10 gun shells under the waterline around the middle of the ship... Go figure. |
maybe large merchant doesn't have a "break into 2" model? i have seen C3 and C2 in 2 pieces in GWX 2.0 but never any ship that is not in the stock game.

Ah...well I by default fire 2 torpedo's in a salvo at a Ship.
spread them out so 1 hits the bow section, the other the Mid/stern. if he floats for too long and the surface is clear I finish it off with the Deck gun HunterICX |

I prefer to salvo only in convoys at the JUCIEY targets. Under normal situations I set one fish to magnetic and one to impact. Fire the magnetic first, open door on the back-up and wait. If it malfunctions I immediately fire the fish set to impact.
Generally speaking, torpedoes were very expensive and I do not want to waste them for fear of being keel-hauled by BdU. Each Kaluen has his own preference in sending a ship to the bottom. This is mine. |
