Personnaly, I like the IX. It dives like a pig in gelatin and is less maneuverable than the VIIC. But it has nicer views from the bridge, a lot more torpedoes than the VII and it can go places.
Like Balz says, it has better acoustics for his choir. It takes some getting used to, one has to be a touch more cautious, especially against aircraft because of the diving time.
