This makes me wish I had those old wartime pictures of my grandfather. He was a reconnaissance pilot stationed in southern England. He used to fly over France and take pictures of enemy fortifications in his little plane (That looks pretty much like your typical pleasure planes you see in the small airports today). He said that he actually became friends with several of the German reconnaissance pilots who were flying the other way each day and doing pretty much the same thing he was doing at the time. They would wave at each other as they would fly past each other, hehe. He probably would have been court marshaled for that if his superiors found out.

At one point, I know he crashed his plane in France, but it wasn't due to enemy fire and he wasn't captured. I think the engine conked out or something like that. I don't recall the whole story, but he had a picture of himself standing next to the smashed up plane. His plane was nammed "Diane" after my mother who was born a month or so after he was shipped over there.

I'm going to have to look up his war reccord some day and maybe piece together everything.

Your pictures disappeared. That is a great find. I asked my mom about her brother who died in WW2. She came out with all sorts of pictures and his wings. He died over Kiel going after the sub pens. He was a B17 pilot. June 13th 1943 shot down. I took the wings, the pictures, a locket he had sent her from England and put them in a shadow box. I want his Purple Heart but that is with my living uncle in NJ who served in the PTO. His casket flag flys over Flushing Cemetary NY on Veterans day. I recommend you do the same if you can. Check to see if there is a website for his squadron

Get you pictures loaded again! I want to see them!

An older co-worker of mine was a member of "The Big Red 1". He was a tank guy but I forgot what role he played in the tank. He was part of a wave that went over on D-Day but when he crossed in, the main fighting was over.

He knew I was interested in war and battles and such so he gave me the "Big Red 1" patch from his old uniform and what looks like a type of medal or badge of some sort. I have no idea what it is. It reads "Virtus Nobili Tat" accross the top. Here's a scan of them. Maybe one of you can recognise what it is.

Any idea what that metal badge is called ? What award was it ? I've never seen this thing before. The guy who gave these to me passed away a couple years ago so I can't ask him obviously.

It does kind of jazz me out knowing that the patch was actually on the beach on D-Day though.

It's not American, that's for sure. Googling the latin phrase on the badge returned lots of hits related to Scotland. I didn't find anything that looked like the badge itself though.

Technically we're related by marriage (my brother, Abdhul, married an American woman; he gave me the boxes, and it wasn't until I opened them till I found what was inside; it's complex).

And they let me fly because they didn't know that side of the family (American side). Not surprised that he's not on that webpage since only 2 kills were confirmed (5 were counted as probable, 1 was called as unconfirmed).

EDIT:

Huh, the pictures are gone. I'll rescan them and post them back tomorrow (bloody Photobucket).
