Default DD's hear you, med range, @ 4knots from behind?

I just approached a convoy at peri depth, silent running. Got past the flower corvette. The corvette was zig zagging away from me. Waited until he was medium range.
Opened to 4 kts. And I was surprised the detection indicator turned red. Periscope was down so the flower must have hear me. No other dd's in the area. Time is 1940 late.

Can destroyers hear behind even at 4 kts?

what version are you using? stock, GWX, NYGM, RuB?

Dds and DEs are known in GWX to go dead in the water while zig zagging more or less getting rid of any blind spots. He will only really have blind spots while he is moving.

It is also possible that an enemy submarine (if using GWX) was also escorting the convoy from another position and heard you. If you are detected by any escort or sonar equipped boat in the area... ALL the escorts will converge on your position.

The DD/DE blind spot is more narrow than you might think... going into any convoy attack situation over 2 knots is a dead give away. above 100 RPM a ww2 era submarine makes more noise than you might think. and U-boats were often discovered because of "prop beats" on allied hydrophones.

others will post more input on your situation. Detection criteria - especialy in GWX is far from arbitrary, if you were detected... im sure there is a good explanation as to why.

Yes...I mean no, it doesn't mean you have been heard...I mean BBW told you right. The meter only tells you how noisy you are at the moment.

Even at 3 kts you can be heard. I approach a convy at 2 kts. After an attack I go down to 1kt after achieving initially satisfactory depth of 80 meters,

I was playing GWX 1.03.

Ok, so 4 kts is too fast. I understand the red color means he could hear me. But believe me, he did.

At least now I know 4 is too fast. I guess I would've thought late 40, only a flower corvette, 1500-2000 meters zigzagging away would've been possiblt to increase speed somewhat. Guess not. Thanks for the info.

in 1939 - 1940 a lot of Anti submarine warfare technology was left over from World War One... but then again so was a lot of Submaring technology too.

evading the escorts will be easier in this early part of the war, but you will notice that it is fairly easy to be detected.

try to mount your attacks under the following conditions

1. Night - your vision is impared but so is visual detection by enemy ships!
2. Rough Seas - If you have heavy sea swells little "hills" are created for your boat to hide behind, also more background noise causes enemy sonar equipment to have greater difficulty in detecting you
3. Slow Speed - the slower you go the less engine RPM you are turning out the less noise you are making (2 kts or less)

your approach should always be from ahead of the convoy and off to one side without going near any escorts. i rig for silent running and ride at 60 meters until its time to pop up to PD and attack.
